ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 8, 2015)—Tiz Midnight and Warren’s Veneda, who were separated by just a head when last they met, head a field of eight older fillies and mares in Sunday’s $75,000, 1 1/16 miles Paseana Stakes at Santa Anita. Trained by Bob Baffert, Tiz Midnight pressed the pace and registered a game victory over Warren’s Veneda in the Grade II, 1 1/16 miles Bayakoa Stakes on Dec. 6 at Los Alamitos.
ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 8, 2015)—Trainer Eric Kruljac’s longshot Not too Shiny attended a fast pace and prevailed in a desperate finish under Tyler Baze to take Thursday’s $60,000 allowance feature at Santa Anita by a head while covering 6 ½ furlongs down the track’s hillside turf course in 1:13.26.
A close third crossing the dirt at the top of the stretch, Baze bided his time inside and shifted three off the rail a furlong out.
Santa Anita will proudly honor California Chrome as the fifth annual recipient of the Secretariat “Vox Populi” Award (the People’s Choice Award) this Saturday.
The California Chrome team will be available that day for an autograph session at 11 a.m. in Santa Anita’s East Paddock Gardens. The first 2,000 fans who arrive at the autograph tent will receive a free California Chrome poster, which will be available only at the autograph tent, one per fan, while supplies last.
Scheduled to attend the autograph session will be Chrome’s regular rider, Victor Espinoza; his trainer, Art Sherman; and owners/breeders Steve Coburn and Perry Martin.
California Chrome, who basked in the national spotlight throughout the year after winning the Santa Anita Derby, the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, was the clear favorite among the record number of voters in the Vox Populi online poll.
He was one of a select group of nominees submitted by the Vox Populi committee and Mrs. Penny Chenery, owner of beloved Triple Crown champion Secretariat, in whose name she established the award in 2010.
ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 7, 2015)—Second in two consecutive Grade I races, trainer Peter Miller’s 3-year-old Calculator seeks his first win in Saturday’s Grade I, $100,000 Sham Stakes at a flat mile. A field of eight sophomores has been engaged, as they head down the road to the $1 million Santa Anita Derby on April 4.
Wellington, FL – January 7, 2014 – Beautiful weather, a gorgeous venue with a lovely set of courses and fabulous hospitality kicked off the first day of The Ridge at Wellington’s 2015 Turf Tour. Wolfstone Stables and Sales Inc host this week’s events. The two rings saw a total of 77 trips throughout the day, allowing for a relaxed but very professional atmosphere welcoming to both horse and rider. With open cards throughout the day, it was quite clear that riders and trainers alike appreciated the ability to come in as it suited them. This had a pleasant byproduct of a schooling ring that never seemed to be too busy but had a constant flow of horses.
