SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 20, 2013) – If Sydni Blanchard and her horse Victory keep up the pace that they started in the third round of bracket 1 and continued through the semi-finals, victory is in their future at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo.

Blanchard, from Albuquerque, N.M., and Victory set a new arena record in the AT&T Center way back on Feb. 9 with a 13.68 second run. That was the beginning of three first-place finishes in row for the dynamic duo. Blanchard came back in semi-finals 1 and won both rounds there. She is headed to the finals as the high-money earnings barrel racer and the second highest money earner of the rodeo so far with $7,369. Prior to San Antonio’s rodeo, Blanchard was 15th in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association world standings with $7854. She has nearly doubled that with one more round to go.

Bull rider J.W. Harris leads all of the contestants with $7,860. Harris, who tied for the championship here in 2009 and has earned three world titles, has won first every time he lasted the full eight seconds on a bull here. He won the first and third rounds of bracket 1, and then finished atop the leaderboard in both rounds of the semi-finals. Harris is currently in 17th place in the world standings. The money he has already won will move him into the top 15.

Qualifying for the finals here is based on total earnings, which all count towards the world standings. The top five from each of two semi-finals will advance to the final round. Those ten contestants will be doing their best to the highest scores and fastest times on Saturday night for a $12,445 check. Second place pays $9,334. Third is $6,223 and fourth will pay $3,111.  So this rodeo has the potential to have a big impact on any of the winners’ season.

Bareback rider Ryan Gray, steer wrestler Luke Branquinho and tie-down roper Hunter Herrin all had to get a first place check on Wednesday night to advance to Saturday night’s finals and that’s exactly what they did. Gray, from Cheney, Wash., got on Calgary Stampede’s horse named Labyrinth for 85 points. Branquinho, from Los Alamos, Calif., stopped the clock in 3.6 seconds, and Herrin, from Apache, Okla., had a 7.1 for the win.

Many of these contestants are leaving here to compete at rodeos in San Angelo, Texas, and Tucson, Ariz., before making the trip back here for the finals. They will anxiously be checking the money standings to see what happens in the second set of semi-finals where the first of two rounds starts on Thursday night.

There is one performance of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Eight-Time Large Indoor Rodeo of the Year on Thursday at 7 p.m.  Complete results can be found at http://www.sarodeo.com/rodeo/results/2013-rodeo-results.
