NICHOLS CANYON TO MISS CALVIN HOUGHLAND IROQUOIS (GR. 1)

A top-drawer field was taking shape Monday for the $200,000 Calvin Houghland Iroquois (Gr. 1), but missing from Saturday’s race will be Nichols Canyon, the Sun Bets Stayers’ Hurdle winner who sustained an injury while shipping to the United States.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. and CHELTENHAM, England – It couldn’t have been scripted any better: The American horse Rawnaq that won last year’s Iroquois Steeplechase by a neck, beating leading Irish horses Shaneshill and Nichols Canyon, went on to win the Eclipse Award. This spring, he was set to compete for the $500,000 bonus at the Cheltenham Festival in March.

Steeplechase’s Rich History (National Steeplechase Association)

American steeplechasing traces its lineage to Ireland, but owes its life to nine men from New York. August Belmont, H. DeCourcy Forbes, Samuel S. Howland, James O. Green, Frederick Gebhard, A.J. Cassatt, Foxhall P. Keene, John G. Follansbee and Frederick H. Prince founded the National Steeplechase Association. The purposes of the organization, according to the original charter dated February 15, 1895, have changed little.

2015 Iroquois Steeplechase Stick Horse Race to Honor Former Child Ambassador Michael Stanley

NASHVILLE, Tennessee, May 8, 2015 – Iroquois Steeplechase announced today that the stick horse race, presented by Cumulus and Phillips Toy Mart, is back for its fourth year. This year, the Iroquois Race Committee has named the stick horse race after Michael Stanley, the 2014 child ambassador who passed away April 23, 2015 after a second battle with cancer.

Tailgating Singles Provide Option for Individuals, Small Groups Looking to Attend the Iroquois Steeplechase

NASHVILLE, Tennessee, March 30, 2015 – For the second consecutive year, the Iroquois Steeplechase is selling Tailgating Singles, or individual tickets, to the infield at the May 9 sporting event. New last year, Tailgating Singles offer individuals the opportunity to attend the races and enjoy all that the infield has to offer, as well as the Iroquois Shoppes, Family Area and some of Nashville’s tastiest food trucks. In past years, race goers have had to purchase an entire tailgating spot, which start at $600 and include eight armbands, to have access to the infield.

 NASHVILLE, Tenn., Jan. 28, 2015 — Nashville ushers in the spring season as only Music City could—with a chorus of revelry from the fields around Percy Warner Park, home to the annual Iroquois Steeplechase. This year marks the 74th year of this premier Southern steeplechase event, which benefits Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.
