Villa del Lago Squeezes Past Enigma 11-10 in Joe Barry Cup Semifinals

Wellington. FL – January 21, 2015 – One point made all the difference Wednesday, earning Villa del Lago a seat at the dinner table next Sunday in the Joe Barry Cup Finals at the International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington, Florida. Villa del Lago beat Enigma in the semifinals, maintaining a razor-thin lead in the last two chukkers to win 11-10.

Agustin Obregon   5             Jeff Hall   7
Polito Pieres   9                    Matias MacDonough   7
Julian de Lusarreta   6          Carlucho Arellano   5

Even legendary sports oddsmaker Jimmy the Greek couldn’t have predicted this one. Enigma owned the field from the get-go all the way until the fifth chukker, smacking in one goal after another and foiling its opponent at nearly every turn. Patron Jerome Wirth and his posse seemed unstoppable, charging ahead of Villa del Lago and keeping them on the run for the first two-thirds of the game – not an easy thing to do to a team powered by 9-goaler Polito Pieres.

Pieres made the first goal of the day but then seem off his stride for a while. In the first half some of his shots on goal went uncharacteristically wide, and he was repeatedly ridden off the ball by the Enigma machine. Jeff Hall, Matias MacDonough and Carlucho Arellano each scored a goal from the field in quick succession, with the first chukker ending 3-1 for Enigma.

Pieres popped in a couple of penalty shots in the second chukker, as did MacDonough and Arellano. A MacDonough-Pieres sword fight spiced things up for a while, and then

(Jerome Wirth. Photo: Liz Lamont/Phelps Media Group.)

MacDonough ran off with the ball. It ended up ping-ponging between Pieres and Hall as they thundered down the field. Pieres swiped it and headed downfield, where he made one of his trademark neckshots, but it went wide of goal. Villa del Lago’s patron, Jim Zenni, scored from the field, tightening Engima’s lead to one point.
The third chukker began 5-4 for Enigma, which promptly reasserted itself, putting two more points on the scoreboard courtesy of MacDonough and Arellano. Enigma displayed some quick and crafty moves, almost toying with Villa del Lago – which remained scoreless in the chukker – like a cat with a mouse. Villa del Lago managed to rally in the fourth chukker, with Pieres and Agustin Obregon each scoring. But Enigma puts its foot down pronto with goals from the field by Hall, MacDonough and Arellano. Going into the fifth chukker, Enigma held a commanding four-point lead (10-6).

Just when it looked like the final scene had been written, the plot changed as fast as in a Fellini movie. Inexplicably (to anyone other than himself), Pieres suddenly sprang into life and stopped Enigma in its tracks. Before the end of the chukker, Pieres and company had scored five goals – five. Enigma, no doubt as stunned as the crowd of spectators, was scoreless.

The fifth chukker ended with Villa del Lago in the driver’s seat, 11-10. And that’s how the game ended, with neither team scoring in the last chukker.

Pieres conceded that Ville del Lago’s game was sub-par for the first half. “At the beginning we played really bad. The worst three chukkers we played,” he said.

Matias MacDonough. Photo: Liz Lamont/Phelps Media Group.

How did they turn things around? “We kept on playing, and we said, ‘We’re going to win; we’re going to win.’  We trusted ourselves. I think we made a hell of a comeback in the fifth chukker. And we’re happy that we won playing bad.”

The Joe Barry Cup semifinals resume Thursday, with Orchard Hill playing Lucchese at IPC at 11 a.m. The Bobby Barry Semifinals take place in the afternoon, with Tonkawa playing Lechuza Caracas at 1 p.m. at Everglades Polo Club and FlexJet opposing Audi at 3 p.m. at IPC.

Kelli Cruciotti Claims Victory in Equine Couture/TuffRider Sponsored $25,000 Artisan Farms Under 25 Grand Prix

Wellington, FL – January 20, 2015 – The Equine Couture and TuffRider brands are known for their fashion forward, high-performance products ideal for young riders, so when the opportunity to sponsor Sunday morning’s $25,000 Artisan Farms Under 25 Grand Prix was presented it came as the perfect fit.

(photo below:Kelli Cruciotti accepts the time honor and prize money, as well as a $500 Equine Couture and TuffRider gift certificate)

Equine Couture and TuffRider have previously sponsored the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF), and brand owners Timmy and Laurie Sharma knew that they wanted to return in support of the circuit and the sport’s up-and-coming talent in 2015.

“We really loved and enjoyed every second of being a part of [WEF], and we really wanted to get involved with the circuit again this year,” Laurie said. “We are so excited especially to be a part of a grand prix with young riders like this. It’s just amazing for us to be a part of something with such talented riders. This is the equestrian capital of the world, so this is just a pure honor.”

Riding away with the winning honor in Sunday’s class, as well as a $500 Equine Couture and TuffRider gift certificate to be redeemed at Tack N Rider, was 17-year-old Kelli Cruciotti. She bested a 68-horse field and an 18-horse jump off before clinching the victory aboard Serenity Equestrian Venture’s Chamonix H.

(photo below: Kelli Cruciotti leads the victory gallop)
“It’s all because of sponsors like TuffRider and Equine Couture that we can do all this – that we can have the best prize money,” Cruciotti said. “It’s wonderful.”

Second place finisher Nicole Bellissimo echoed Cruciotti’s sentiments. “It’s a fantastic series,” she said. “Thank you to Artisan Farms and to TuffRider and Equine Couture for doing it because it’s really fantastic.”

Bellissimo claimed her second place spot aboard Bellissimo LLC’s VDL Bellefleur, while third place went to Sydney Shulman and her brand new mount Venice.

All three young riders exemplify the incredible pool of young talent currently competing at WEF and the bright future of the equestrian sport – a future that the Sharmas and Equine Couture and TuffRider feel strongly about supporting.

In addition to the support of Sunday’s class, Equine Couture and TuffRider will be extending brand ambassadorship positions to some of the series top performing young riders.

“We’ll be selecting from the winners of the series,” Timmy said. “We look forward to getting product input and ideas from the young riders on how we can improve our products, and

some of new things that we need to be doing.”

Spectacular victory for Germany’s Dreher and Embassy ll at Longines leg in Leipzig

Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping 2014/2015 – Round 9, Leipzig

by Louise Parkes
Hans-Dieter Dreher and the fabulous stallion, Embassy ll, produced an exhibition of spectacular jumping to win the ninth leg of the Longines FEI World Cup™ 2014/2015 Western European League series on home ground at Leipzig, Germany today.

The handsome 14-year-old horse was on top form when clinching victory from last-to-go spot in the five-way jump-off against the clock. And the spectators went wild at the end of a superb but super-tough afternoon of sport during which Frank Rothenberger’s first-round track tested the mettle of the very best.

Kristen VanderVeen and Bull Run’s Faithful Win at the Wellington Turf Tour

Wellington, FL – January 15, 2015 -Vast green polo fields created the perfect backdrop for the start of the second week of The Ridge at Wellington’s Turf Tour.

Competition in both rings remained strong throughout the day on Wednesday, January 14. While the weather remained overcast for most of the morning, the sun peeked out during the afternoon to highlight a beautiful set of courses that rode well for the competitors. The Grand Prix field saw riders from 8 a.m. until the sun began to fade around 5 p.m. The second ring stayed quite busy until the medium jumpers finished up in the mid-afternoon. The show saw almost 130 trips, significantly growing from week one of the Turf Tour.

Kristen VanderVeen rode Bull Run’s Faithful, owned by Bull Run Jumpers, Inc. to the top of the standings in the first $2,400 1.3-1.35m jumpers. VanderVeen was very pleased with her new ride on the mare.

Bull Run's Faithful and Kristen VanderVeen Win at The Ridge at Wellington's Turf Tour

“She’s brand new, so it’s only the second time we’ve shown. Last week we did her at the first stop of the Turf Tour, so I’m really happy,” VanderVeen said. “She’s a little spicy so I’m getting used to her, but she’s a gamer in the ring. It’s really nice here; the ground is so solid I don’t feel like we’re going to have any trouble.”

Jeffery Welles finished second on Triton Ventures Farms Inc’s Calais, finishing less than a tenth of a second behind Faithful. He was also fourth on Herbert Sambol’s Broken Heart.

Andrew Welles rode his own Quickly 3 to a third place finish. Andrew spoke very highly of the Turf Tour.                                                 (Calais and Jeffery Welles)

Jeffery Welles and Calais

“It’s a fantastic facility and a great opportunity to do something different with our horses. I think it’s fantastic that we get to come and jump on grass, not just grass but a facility like IPC is just phenomenal for the horses,” Andrew said. “I’m planning to come back on Friday. The horse I did had a nice little break after doing well in the grand prixs in December so this was his first week back.”

Tennyson, ridden by Darrin Dliin for Susan Grange, came in fifth. Peter Leone rode Lionshare Farm’s My Pleasure to finish sixth. Leone was enthusiastic about why he chose to come to The Ridge at Wellington’s Turf Tour. “Quality venue, quality jumps, quality course designing and nice money.”

(Cassidy and Ansgar Holtgers)

Ansgar Holtgers, riding his own Cassidy, won the second $2,400 1.3-1.35m jumper class. Cartoon City, owned and ridden by Marcus Hagglund finished second. Third went to Gabrielle Pelchat, riding her own Just Stella. Hot Topic, owned by Finca Horses Inc and ridden by Nina Fagerstrom finished fourth. Beth Underhill rode her own Viggo to claim a fifth place. Nimbus, owned by Blue Gate Farm LLC was ridden by Denise Wilson to finish sixth.

The second ring saw plenty of action throughout the morning and early afternoon. The first class of the day was the low jumpers, won by Sarah Wayda on Rene Johnson’s Josephine, out of a very competitive field of 29.

Second went to Click For Quality, ridden by Marshall Field for Hidden Brook Farm. Jennifer Knobel rode her own Stash to finish third. Fourth went to Chambery 25, owned and ridden by Adolpho Franco. Alpen Star Enterprises’ Ae La Gracia finished fifth, ridden by Tatiana Gabrush. Debbi White rounded out the top six on her own Basil Hayden.

Marshall Field, who rode Hidden Brook Farm’s London and Carpathia K to finish first and second, dominated the second class of the low jumpers. Morgan Bailey rode her own Baby Ruth to finish third. Fourth went to Ansgar Holtgers on his own Delinda. Christine McCrea rode Candy Tribble’s Centrefold to a fifth place finish. Ae La Gracia finished sixth, ridden by Tatiana Gabrush and owned by Alpen Star Enterprises.

The second division was the medium jumpers at 1.2-1.25m. Paul Yanke continued to build on his successes from last week, claiming first aboard Equinvest’s Lady Sparkle and second on his own Carle. Sarah Wayda had three horses in the ribbons, riding Rene Johnson’s horses Maximus and Artemis to finish third and fifth respectively. She also rode Rian Miller’s Contentus to sixth. Fourth went to Unik De Vergne, owned by Nicolas Paillot and owned by Anne Caroline Valtin.

Ansgar Holtgers on his own El Casper won the second class of the medium jumpers, followed by Eric Flameng riding Floriac LLC’s Balous Boy.

Friday’s events promise to be exciting, with the $15,000 1.4m Grand Prix running from 8 a.m. through 4:30 p.m.. Beginning at 8 a.m., there will be both child/adult and masters jumper classes, along with a classic round for both divisions, running concurrently with open cards until noon.
