Young bulls’ athleticism showcased at Scottsdale Showdown

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Oct. 19, 2013 –The rising stars of Championship Bull Riding (CBR) were showcased at the Scottsdale Showdown on Saturday morning, but these athletes were the four legged kind.

The Championship Futurity Tour (CFT), like the Palace Station Million Dollar Bull Team Challenge gives bucking bull owners the opportunity to put together a team of bulls for competition. The five-stop tour culminated here in Scottsdale with 28 teams hoping to get a share of the $142,500 payout.

Each team consisted of three two-year-old bulls that bucked with an electronic riding dummy that automatically came off of the bull after five seconds, giving animals equal opportunities to perform. Four judges evaluated the bulls scoring them 1-25 for a total possible score of 100. Then the team’s scores were added together with the highest total score garnering the biggest check.

When it was all said and done, a Texas partnership earned their third title of the year. Carpenter Brothers (Hempstead, Texas) and Hudgins (Cypress, Texas) put their team together last February, and unlike many of their counterparts, used the same three bulls at every competition. Those bulls, 107 – Jail House Socks, 136 – Hurricane Harry, and 138 – Cracker Jack, had a total score of 262.25 to win $50,000.

The bulls are all half-brothers on their sire’s side out of another bull they raised, Jailhouse Rock. Not only did they have the champion team here, Hurricane Harry was the high-marked bull of the event at 88.5 points.

“It’s unbelievable,” said Ricky Carpenter. “To have come to three of these events and won all three is too good to believe.”

Finishing second were three bulls from Oklahoma owned by Barrett & Crawford who were just 2.5 points behind at 260.75 to earn $35,625. Third place paid $24,225 to Flying D Bucking Bulls from Claremore, Okla., who had a total score of 258.25.
