PRCA Weekly Press Release- June 10, 2013

SISTERS, Ore. – Chason Floyd’s family owns a ranch in the northwest corner of South Dakota, where he helps work 700 head of cattle whenever he’s not on the road competing. Given recent events, he’s unlikely to see that place or the backsides of those cattle in Ludlow any time soon.

Undeterred by a lengthy dry spell – it had been nine rodeos since he’d last been to the pay window in San Antonio – Floyd overcame an elite field of steer wrestlers June 7-9 to win the 73rd annual Sisters Rodeo and bank checks totaling $3,678.

Floyd rode Tiger, a horse he co-owns with traveling partner Clayton Moore, to win the first round in 4.1 seconds and then put up a solid run of 4.7 in the second go to hold off Jake Rinehart and Sean Santucci by four-tenths of a second in the two-head average.

“This really helped,” Floyd said. “I didn’t have a very good winter or spring, so the timing of this is real good. I’ll go hard for as long as the money holds out.

“When you are going up against a bunch of the top guys like we did here, you have to have a bit of luck, and I was very fortunate with the steers I drew in both rounds.”

Employing an international strategy last year, Floyd won the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association Rookie of the Year Award for bulldoggers and qualified for the Canadian Finals Rodeo while finishing second to Dakota Eldridge in the PRCA Rookie Standings (and 38th overall) with earnings of $27,533.

A return to the CFR is certainly on his to-do list – after leaving Sisters he went to Alberta rodeos in Brooks, Lea Park and Rocky Mountain House (winning a check at the latter) – but Floyd is thinking a good deal bigger than that.

“We (he and Moore) are aiming for the (Wrangler) NFR,” Floyd said. “That’s the goal and we’re going to go hard for it.”

If you are going to stay out on the road for the long haul, it’s good to have patience and a touch of fatalism, a lesson that was impressed upon Floyd, Moore, Billy Boldon and Ethen Thouvenell once again when they set off from the Sisters parking lot bound for Canada.

First there was trouble with a hub, then an issue with the brakes. After dealing with all of that, unloading and re-loading the trailer, the guys rolled into Marwayne at 6:30 a.m., just 90 minutes before they were up in slack there.

“It was kind of a hard drive,” Floyd said, “but it was an experience. It’s all part of the deal.”

The other champions in this $137,584 rodeo were bareback rider Steven Peebles (87 points), team ropers Jake Stanley and Jake Minor (5.1 seconds), saddle bronc rider Cody Wright (87 points), tie-down roper Stetson Vest (20.4 seconds on two head), bull rider Parker Breding (86 points) and barrel racer Jade Crossley (17.50 seconds). Wright’s scored equaled the arena record set by Scott Miller in 2010 and later equaled by Jesse Kruse, Bradley Harter and Tyrell Smith.

2. Mitchell shows readiness for Wrangler NFR run

LIVERMORE, Calif.  – These days it doesn’t seem to matter who Spencer Mitchell backs into the box next to – he’s been able to win regardless.

At the 95th annual Livermore Rodeo, Mitchell partnered with Cody Cowden to win the team roping with a 4.5-second run, earning each man $2,798.

The two-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier has been paired with a number of heelers so far in 2013, and has won with three different men next to him.

“All the people I’ve won with are guys I enjoy roping with,” Mitchell said, “and I’m always comfortable with those guys and I have a lot of confidence in them.”

Livermore was his second win with Cowden, but Mitchell has also picked up 2013 victories with Dugan Kelly (Wrangler Champions Challenge in Redding, Calif.) and Justin Wade Davis (Marysville, Calif.).

Ironically, he still hasn’t taken a victory lap with his 2012 Wrangler NFR partner, Dakota Kirchenschlager. The duo hasn’t been roping together much with Kirchenschlager staying close to home in Texas during the spring run.

“A person needs to be able to win with whoever their name is down with, but it means a lot to be roping with Dakota again this summer and we hope to pick things back up,” said Mitchell, who is looking for his third straight WNFR trip this winter.

“Dakota and I take off next week for the summer run. Our first rodeo will be Weatherford (Texas) and then we’ll head to Reno.”

Although the pair will have some ground to make up, Mitchell (44th in the world standings at the start of the week) isn’t worried one bit about how they’ll perform.

“As far as where we are in the standings, we’ve both come from behind the last few years anyways,” he said. “We like to rope aggressive and we like to be chasing people down.”

The Livermore win was also special to Mitchell – a Colusa, Calif., native – since he and the late Broc Cresta won the title there last season.

“Having the opportunity to win that rodeo after having been successful with Broc in that arena last year was nice,” Mitchell said.

The other winners in this $85,808 rodeo at Livermore Stadium were bareback rider George Gillespie IV (87 points), steer wrestler Billy Bugenig (3.1 seconds), saddle bronc riders Tyrell Smith and Wade Sundell (82 points each), tie-down roper Jack Vanderlans (8.3 seconds), bull rider Cody Campbell (90 points) and barrel racer Linda Vick (17.57 seconds).

3. Vold learns virtue of repetition in Alberta rodeos

MARWAYNE, Alberta – Jake Vold just can’t seem to stop repeating himself.

One week after winning the bareback riding title in Hand Hills, Alberta, for the second consecutive year, Vold doubled back and successfully defended his title at the Lea Park Rodeo in Marwayne, Alberta.

Vold rode Calgary Stampede’s Special Delivery for 88 points and the win in Lea Park Arena, two points ahead of Dusty LaValley and Seth Hardwick, who tied for second.

“It’s funny how things work out,” Vold said. “Just the day before the stock draw I was telling someone how much I wanted to get on Special Delivery and then I drew him for Marwayne.

“I’ve seen him maybe half a dozen times in rodeos up here, and he’s the buckiest horse in Canada. Guys win a lot of money on him. He’s the one you want. When you draw like that, you can do some good.”

The Ponoka, Alberta, cowboy is hoping all this repetition can help lead him to a place he’s never been before – the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Injuries, most notably a fractured ankle suffered at the Clovis (Calif.) Rodeo in 2011, have prevented Vold, 26, from getting to rodeo’s biggest stage.

He’s finished 24th and 26th in the world standings the last two years despite a limited schedule and will be on the road all summer with fellow Canadians Ty Taypotat and Matt Lait to see about moving up in the standings.

“It (the Wrangler NFR) is definitely a goal I want to accomplish,” Vold said. “I agree with (reigning World Champion) Kaycee Feild’s approach to competing, where you limit the number of rodeos where you go, but you make sure you go to the big ones.

“I went to about 39 rodeos last year and I didn’t rodeo that hard this winter. We’re going to pick it up this summer, going to more rodeos in Canada and coming down for the Fourth of July run for rodeos in Red Lodge (Mont.), Cody (Wyo.), Molalla (Ore.), Livingston (Mont.) and St. Paul (Ore.). We’ll see where we are after that.”

The other champions at the $89,334 rodeo were steer wrestlers Derek Frank, Clayton Moore and Travis Reay (4.3 seconds each), team ropers Jesse Sheffield and Rhen Richard (4.6 seconds), saddle bronc rider Chet Johnson (85 points), tie-down roper Morgan Grant (8.3 seconds), bull rider Scott Schiffner (88.5 points) and barrel racer Lee Ann Rust (16.095 seconds).

• Those four Xtreme Bulls Division 2 events in three days last week didn’t end up providing any PRCA bull riders a big bump in the standings. It wasn’t just that there were different champions at each venue – Jeff Askey and Matt Pojanowski in Gladewater, Texas; Scottie Knapp in Sisters, Ore.; Paul Coppini in Union, Ore., and Kody Lostroh in Elizabeth, Colo. – it was the way the money got spread around so comprehensively. Thirty-four men won checks in those four Xtreme Bulls events and the only guy who earned money at more than one event, Rocky McDonald, collected just $722 from a tie for sixth in Elizabeth and a tie for eighth in Sisters. Knapp’s win allowed him to move from 12th to seventh in the Xtreme Bulls Tour standings, but none of the other title winners even advanced into the Tour’s Top 20.

• A win at the Pioneer Days Rodeo in Clovis, N.M., parlayed with a third-place result at the Wild Wild West ProRodeo in Silver City, N.M., allowed saddle bronc rider Bradley Harter to surpass the $1 million mark in career earnings over the June 7-9 weekend. Harter, of Weatherford, Texas, rode Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Flying Fletch for 81 points to get the win in Clovis and push his career total up to $1,000,323. He is the 109thPRCA cowboy to hit that milestone.

• For the third time in as many weeks, the steer roping world standings have a new leader. Cody Lee of Gatesville, Texas, surged past last week’s No. 1, JoJo LeMond, with a win at the Pioneer Days Rodeo in Clovis, N.M.; a second-place finish at the Wild Wild West ProRodeo in Silver City, N.M., and a fifth-place result at the Ken Lance Memorial Rodeo in Ada, Okla. Lee’s total of $30,790 gives him a lead of $2,261 over Chet Herren of Pawhuska, Okla. It was the only lead change of the week.

• Call him Mr. Consistency. Saddle bronc rider Wade Sundell demonstrated he’s ready for a strong summer run with his performance over the June 7-9 weekend. He won both rounds and the average at the Eastern Oregon Livestock Show in Union, tied for first with Tyrell Smith at the Livermore (Calif.) Rodeo, tied for second at the Beef Empire Days PRCA Rodeo in Garden City, Kan., and tied for fourth at the Sisters (Ore.) Rodeo for checks totaling $6,149.

Stratton was a major supporter of improvements to the fairgrounds, including the arena, new corrals, infrastructure and landscaping. He was also one of the advocates for bringing the College National Finals Rodeo to Casper. “Fred was a man’s man, all cowboy, a great leader in the community,” said fellow board member Pete Greiner … The Reno (Nev.) Rodeo Association has donated $91,200 to Marvin Picollo School to build a new playground for its special needs students. “Because of the special nature of the equipment we needed, the surfacing to go around it, and all those different features, the price tag was pretty high,” said Principal Matt Burak. “Without the donation it wouldn’t have been possible.” … The May 31 through June 2 Santa Maria (Calif.) Elks Rodeo had attendance of more than 25,000, breaking the record set a year earlier, and rodeo spokesperson Johnna Clark said the committee is planning on adding more seating for 2014 … Alex andHeather Robertson raised $1,500 for the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund and another $1,500 for the Columbia River Circuit Crisis Fund on June 5 with their annual Premier Steer Wrestling at the Sisters, Ore., rodeo grounds. Blake Knowles and Chason Floyd finished 1-2 in the bulldogging competition … Bareback rider D.V. Fennell, a two-time Wrangler NFR qualifier and an assistant rodeo coach at McNeese State University (Lake Charles, La.), married barrel racer Bailey Ellison on June 8 at the Cowboy Gathering Church in Inola, Okla. …

“It’s probably the tamest rough-stock event, but still completely dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing. But you don’t have a big angry bull chasing you when you get off.”

— Saddle bronc rider Nick Laduke telling the Contra Costa Times about the relative merits of his event.
