FORT SMITH, Ark. – It looks like Shane Proctor might be reaching top form at just the right time.
Just 24th in the world standings at the start of the May 27 through June 1 Old Fort Days Rodeo, Proctor came through with an 88-point ride on Silver Creek Pro Rodeo’s Radical Roller to earn the win at Harper Stadium and $4,046.
It was his second big win in two weeks, following up on a 93-point ride at the Redding (Calif.) Rodeo – equal to the season’s highest score – and it takes him into the start of the lucrative summer season with a spot inside the Top 20 and a nice rise in momentum.
The 88 points Proctor received on Radical Roller was the most ever achieved on a bull who has a 66.7-percent buck-off rate.
Proctor was one of three past world champions to earn at least a share of a title at Old Fort Days.
Bareback rider Bobby Mote, who has four gold buckles back home in Culver, Ore., shared the win at Harper Stadium with Brian Bain and Micky Downare, all with scores of 85 points, and two-time World Champion Barrel Racer Brittany Pozzi won her event in a time of 15.97 seconds.
The other champions at this $147,042 rodeo were steer wrestler Justin Smith (8.0 seconds on two head), rookie team ropers Hunter Munsell and Braden Harmon (10.0 seconds on two head), saddle bronc rider Heith DeMoss (85 points), tie-down roper Tyson Durfey (16.3 seconds on two head) and steer roper JoJo LeMond (31.2 seconds on three head).
LeMond’s win moved him to first place in the steer roping world standings for the first time in his career, just $709 ahead of Chet Herren.
Jake Cooper of Monument, N.M., won the all-around title with $3,114 earned in team roping and tie-down roping.
2. Edge sharp at Grand Prairie Stompede
GRAND PRAIRIE, Alberta – There was a time when a weekend like Dean Edge just had – wins at the Grand Prairie Stompede and the Hand Hills Lake Rodeo – would have gotten him thinking about expanding his schedule and making a run at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. A growing family has shifted his priorities.
Edge is 33 and has three children, including twins Lane and Lexie, who turn 1 on June 4. He is focused on his work as an auctioneer during fall and spring, driving to sale barns all over Alberta, to put food on the table. Rodeo is his second career.
“You’re pretty much assured of a check at the end of the day (when you auctioneer),” Edge said. “When we get busy in March, we might go to 20 auctions in a month, sometimes two in a day.”
Edge’s goals now are directed on getting back to the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Edmonton, Alberta, this fall. He’s qualified for the CFR six times as a tie-down roper, but has missed the last two years, largely due to arm and knee injuries in 2011 and to focus on the twins’ birth a year ago.
The long weekend of competition in Alberta this weekend went a long way toward returning him to his national championships.
Edge had a time of 8.8 seconds in slack May 29 in Grand Prairie and that stood up for five days to give him the win and $2,826. He didn’t have any luck at the Leduc (Alberta) Black Gold Rodeo, but came right back to win the Hand Hills Lake Rodeo with a time of 8.7 seconds for another $1,232.
“I got a chance to watch the calves in the morning before slack (in Grand Prairie) and there was one that seemed a little bit slower,” Edge said. “I tucked that away and when I drew that calf, I was careful at the barrier. I still didn’t think my time was going win the rodeo … but I’m glad it did. This should move me up to the top of the (Canadian) standings.
The other champions at the $103,870 rodeo at Grand Prairie’s Evergreen Park were bareback riders Caleb Bennett, Dusty LaValley and Luke Creasy (88 points each), steer wrestler Billy Boldon (4.4 seconds), team ropers Clay Ullery and Riley Warren (5.0 seconds), saddle bronc rider Rylan Geiger (85.5 points), bull rider Tanner Byrne (89.5 points) and barrel racer Katie Garthwaite (15.257 seconds).
3. Whitaker first to reach Linderman standard
CHEROKEE, Iowa – Seven is the point and Kyle Whitaker has the dice in his hand.
Whitaker is the only man ever to win the Linderman Award six times and after a profitable run through the May 30 through June 1 Cherokee PRCA Rodeo, he is the first man this year to reach the qualifying standard for the award issued to the most versatile all-around hand in rodeo.
After second-place finishes in both the saddle bronc riding and tie-down roping in Cherokee, Whitaker now has more than $1,000 in earnings in three events (with at least one of them from each end of the arena).
Focused on qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in steer wrestling last year, Whitaker failed to qualify for the Linderman Award for the first time since 1997 and then had his season end last September when he suffered a torn pectoral muscle.
“It’s great to come back from a big surgery like that and qualify (for the Linderman) right away,” Whitaker said. “The doctors told me it usually takes guys six months to come back from that kind of injury, but I was competing again in four. My first rodeo back was Rapid City (S.D.) around the first of February.
“I feel like I’m stronger now than I was, so maybe there was some good to come of it. But it was hard to see that at the time. It was a heartbreaker. To work that hard and come that close (he was 14th as late as August before getting hurt) … it’s a tough thing. You just have to keep going, I guess.”
Whitaker got a new saddle last year and “it took awhile to get it set up right,” but that is no longer an issue. He’s been in four saddle bronc riding competitions this season and won checks in two. In Cherokee, he earned 81 points on Yes or No of the Barnes PRCA Rodeo string for a second-place check of $974 and then had a 9.6-second run in the tie-down roping that was also good for second place – and $929. He won the all-around title with $1,903.
The other champions in this $35,954 rodeo were bareback rider Ty Breuer (87 points), steer wrestler Tyler Judd Harris (4.0 seconds), team ropers J.B. Lord and Jesse Fredrickson (5.7 seconds), saddle bronc rider Weston Pierschbacher (84 points), tie-down roper Riley Pruitt (8.5 seconds), bull rider Brett Stall (84 points) and barrel racer Karleen Weigel (15.53 seconds).
• J.W. Harris extended his PRCA record for most 90-point bull rides to an eye-popping 72 on June 1 when he won the Hugo (Okla.) PRCA Rodeo with a winning 92-pointer on Rafter H Rodeo Livestock Company’s No. 409. It was the 19th ride of his career to earn a score of 92 or better and was enough to hold off Tyler Smith on this day by three points. Harris’ big win helped provide an intriguing study in contrasts in Hugo. On one end of the scale were Harris, a three-time world champion, and the team roping pair of Nick Sartain (2009 world champion) and the estimable eight-time World Champion Heeler Rich Skelton, who won their event with a time of 4.2 seconds. But there were also two rookies who finished atop the leaderboard: bareback rider Taylor Price (81 points) and tie-down roper Marty Yates (8.4 seconds).
• In his four-plus years as a PRCA card holder, Steven Peebles had earned $415,200, every cent of it in bareback riding – until this week. The Redmond, Ore., cowboy won the first all-around title of his professional career at the Central Point (Ore.) Wild Rogue ProRodeo by winning the bareback riding – he was a point better than four-time World Champion Bobby Mote – and then pairing with Sam Willis to finish sixth in the team roping for total earnings of $2,907. “I’ve kind of roped my whole life,” Peebles said, “but up to now I’ve concentrated on bareback riding in ProRodeo and just team roped at jackpots when I was around home. Coulee City (Wash.) was our first rodeo roping together and Central Point the second. Now Sam and I are thinking we’ll rope at some more (Columbia River) circuit rodeos. It was fun. I don’t think I’ve won an all-around title since my junior (rodeo) days.” Peebles has been getting some tips from Wrangler NFR heeler Russell Cardoza (Willis’ son-in-law), who lives about five miles down the road. The other champions at this $75,759 rodeo were steer wrestler Sterling Lambert (4.1 seconds), team ropers Riley Minor and Brady Minor (4.8 seconds), saddle bronc riders Ben Londo and Bryan Martinat (81 points each – both men drawing Corey & Lange’s Special Delivery), tie-down ropers Jake Echevarria and Chant DeForest (9.2 seconds each), bull rider Shawn Proctor (86 points) and barrel racer Christina Richman (13.71 seconds).
• Brazile Watch: Seventeen-time World Champion Trevor Brazile won a round of the steer roping in Hugo, Okla., and tied for second in a round of the tie-down roping in Fort Smith, Ark., to push his season earnings total to $51,455. Brazile is seventh in the tie-down roping world standings, eighth in the steer roping and first in the all-around as he attempts to equal or break Guy Allen’s record of 18 gold buckles. His lead in the all-around standings is more than $9,000 over Landon McClaugherty.
4. Xtremely busy week for bull riding set
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Among the 28 PRCA-sanctioned events this week are four stops on the Xtreme Bulls Tour – some sort of record for a single week – and a bit of a scheduling challenge for the bull riders who are qualified to compete in the 42-man fields.
These four are all at the Division 2 level, but are all kick-offs for rodeos at the same venue and they offer $20,000 in prize money at each stop. That means a guy can win nearly $4,000 in one day, an appealing draw for any cowboy looking to rise in the world standings.
Given that the brand new Xtreme Bulls event in Gladewater, Texas, and the one in Sisters, Ore., are both scheduled for June 5, nobody can make it to all four events, but there is an ambitious group of five who are entered in three of them.
Tim Bingham, Seth Glause, Rocky McDonald, Nevada Newman and Tyler Willis are all going to compete at Sisters on June 5, Union, Ore., on June 6 and Elizabeth, Colo., on June 7.
For Glause, who has been forced out of action by injury since December’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, there is a sense of urgency to this quest. With zero dollars, Glause is spotting the 15th guy in the standings – traveling partner Willis, as it turns out – a bit more than $22,000 in his bid to return the Wrangler NFR.
“I kind of got lucky as it happened,” Glause said. “The doctors just cleared me in time to enter this week with all these Xtreme Bulls events on the schedule. I figured if I’m going to jump in, I’m going to jump in with both feet. Originally I was told it would take a full six months to recover from this surgery (to repair his dislocated right shoulder), so I’m getting back a month earlier than planned.”
Glause and Willis will drive out from their homes in Wyoming to compete in the X Bulls events in Sisters and Union, fly back to Colorado for the Elizabeth X Bulls and the Elizabeth Stampede, then fly back to Oregon to compete in the Sisters Rodeo. That potentially comes to eight bulls in five days.
“I guess this will be a pretty good test,” Glause said. “When I compete in Sisters (on June 5), it will be first time I’ve climbed on a bull since the 10th round of the NFR.”
5. News and notes from the rodeo trail
“Necktie,” is the new unofficial mascot of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. He is the world-famous bucking horse who nine-time World Champion Casey Tibbs is riding on the larger-than-life bronze statue out in front of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, as well as the image that makes up the past and current logos of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. Necktie is a dark sorrel gelding and he is wearing a necktie in Casey Tibbs’ favorite and lucky color of purple. Necktie will be available for purchase in the new ProRodeo Hall of Fame souvenir shop in another week or two … Stock contractor Cotton Rosser will receive an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, at a reception June 15 at the Madonna Inn Garden Room. Rosser, who graduated from Cal Poly in 1952 with a degree in animal science, is being recognized for his ProRodeo Hall of Fame career as the operator of Flying U Rodeo Company and Rosser Rodeo Company. Also being honored at the reception will be business leader James W. Boswell and famed artist Alfred Quyawayma … The rodeo committee at the Cherokee (Iowa) PRCA Rodeo held a “Pass the Boot” fundraiser during all three nights of the May 30 through June 1 event to help victims of the Cherokee County Memorial Weekend flood. All of the more than $3,500 raised will be distributed locally by the Cherokee County Ministerial Alliance, according to Julie Hering Kent, executive director of the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce. Checks may be sent to the CCMA, P.O. Box 853, Cherokee, IA 51012 … After the Bennington, Kan., area was hit by a tornado and received 3.4 inches of rain over two days last week, the Bennington PRCA Rodeo committee rallied its troops to eliminate standing water and had the facility ready to go in good shape for the first performance May 30 … The Wild West Memorial, a May 24-27 timed-event competition in Groesbeck, Texas, raised more than $7,000 for the families of the first-responders killed in the April 17 fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas. Steer ropers Lawson Plemons and Rocky Pattersoneach donated a portion of their winnings to the cause. PRCA stock contractor Bobby Joe Hill organized the event and is planning to hold the benefit event again next year over the Memorial Day weekend … Karen Green was recognized for two decades of volunteer work with the Canyonlands PRCA Rodeo in Moab, Utah, by being named Grand Marshal of this weekend’s event, appearing in the June 1 parade and in each night’s grand entry … As part of its inaugural Xtreme Bulls Tour event on June 5, the Gladewater (Texas) Round-Up will stage a memorial tribute for 1972 World Champion Bull Rider John Quintana, who died in a plane crash in Australia in March. Quintana set a world record in Gladewater with a 94-point ride onBilly Minick’s V61 in 1971, launching the rodeo into the national spotlight … As part of the run-up to this week’s Livermore (Calif.) Rodeo there were screenings at the Vine Cinema June 2 of the documentary Challenge of the Champions and the feature film Eight Seconds. Both tell the story of the late Lane Frost and the series of seven special bull riding events in 1988 which matched Frost against previously unridden Red Rock. Livermore was the site of the fourth event in the series and Frost had a successful ride there on his way to a 4-3 advantage over the Growney Brothers-owned bull … Carol Sue Mapston, the mother of 10-time Wrangler NFR saddle bronc riding qualifier Ryan Mapston and 1988 Montana Circuit saddle bronc riding champion Gray Mapston, died May 25 of injuries suffered in a traffic accident near her home in Arlee, Mont. She was 72 …Will Smith from Marshall, Mo., won the Casey Tibbs Match of Champions in Fort Pierre, S.D., on June 1 by scoring an 89 on PRCA Bucking Horse of the Year Chuckulator from Sutton Rodeos. Smith received $5,500 and the coveted “Tornado Bronze” statue while Sterling Crawley, the 2012 Match winner from Stephenville, Texas, placed second with 85.5 points on Korkow’s Fraid Not. Third place went to Ty Manke of Box Elder, S.D. on Sutton Rodeo’s South Point … Carlee Pierce, who finished second in the barrel racing world standings a year ago and is third in the 2013 standings, will be taking a hiatus from the sport for an indefinite period to spend more time with her family. “I won’t rodeo without my family,” said Pierce, a Canadian-born cowgirl who was raised in the northwest Oklahoma community of Freedom said in a statement. “This year my three kids do not want to go, and they want me to stay home more, not just a few days at a time. My family is too important for me; they will always come first.”
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“These animals thrive on this. It’s just like people. When somebody feels good, they’re happy and they’re upbeat. They carry themselves differently. It’s the same with a horse. When a bucking horse knows he’s going to get to buck, he gets excited, and he’s ready to go.”
— Stock contractor Pete Carr
