OKLAHOMA CITY – The United Way has set up its temporary control center at the Goodwill Headquarters building in downtown Oklahoma City to assist with the distribution of PRCA merchandise to those affected by the recent tornadoes in Moore, Okla., and the surrounding areas.
Tornado victims will be able to come in and select what they need at no charge.
The PRCA donated 300 boxes of 2012 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo merchandise valued at approximately $30,000 to aid the people of Oklahoma. Assisting in the effort was the PRCA’s partner, Express Lazy E.
“The PRCA is happy to be able to support our rodeo family and friends in Moore, Oklahoma City and all of the nearby areas which were affected by these tragic storms,” PRCA Commissioner Karl Stressman said. “Oklahoma City is the site of one of our biggest PRCA events – the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo – and we hope this donation will help those in need during this time of rebuilding.”
2. Canadian Kelts cashes in at Bonnyville Rodeo
BONNYVILLE, Alberta – Whenever Sam Kelts can win a check in Canada, it’s a two-for-one special.
The Millarville, Alberta, resident rode Franklin Rodeo’s Scottish Lass for 85 points and the saddle bronc riding title at the Bonnyville ProRodeo, and the $1,574 he earned will help his stock in two sets of standings.
“The money I win at these Canadian rodeos goes toward both the PRCA standings and my hopes of making it to Las Vegas, as well as toward the CPRA (Canadian Professional Rodeo Association) standings,” Kelts said.
“It’s nice to be able to hit some quality rodeos up here in Canada during the spring season and not have to travel down south as much until Reno starts.”
The 29-year-old bronc rider has been painfully close to making it to his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo the past two seasons.
In 2011, Kelts was 13th in the world standings before suffering a season-ending injury in Fort Madison, Iowa. He got to rodeo full time in 2012, but was about $7,000 short of the final cut for the WNFR.
Kelts – whose father Jim was the 1984 CPRA saddle bronc riding champion – has remained healthy and is riding well thus far in 2013, as he chases two dreams at once.
“Making it to the NFR and winning a Canadian title are my two biggest rodeo dreams that I’ve had since I was a little kid,” said Kelts, who currently sits in the top three of the CPRA standings. “It would be amazing to be able to knock both of those out in the same season.”
Kelts has traveled with fellow Canadians Dustin Flundra and Luke Butterfield for several years, and the trio just added a fresh face to the troupe. Layton Green, 19, has jumped into the rig, and in Bonnyville he made an immediate impact – tying for fourth.
“That was the first rodeo he entered with us,” Kelts said of Green. “I had seen him a couple of times this spring and I hope he can keep up the success and everyone in our group can do well.”
The attitude in the truck has been positive and competitive, which is something Kelts sees as an advantage for the quartet.
“You need to travel with guys who have the same desire and motivation as you, because it’s hard to be around guys who don’t when you’re on the road as much as we are,” he said. “We’re all focused and wanting to hit the road hard.”
Other winners at the $52,997 rodeo were bareback rider Clayton Bunney (83.5 points), steer wrestler Trygve Pugh (3.3 seconds), team ropers Levi Simpson and John Robertson (4.3 seconds), tie-down roper Kyle Lucas (7.5 seconds), bull rider Beau Brooks (87 points) and barrel racer Brittany Fleck (16.668 seconds).
3. Gray stays on track for WNFR return
GRASSY BUTTE, N.D. – Ryan Gray isn’t messing around in 2013, and he surely doesn’t plan on missing the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo again.
The 29-year-old bareback rider continued his mission to make it back to Las Vegas for an eighth time with a win at the Maah Daah Hey Stampede in Grassy Butte, N.D., over the weekend.
Gray – who made it to the WNFR consecutively from 2005-11 – finished 17th in the world standings in 2012. This season he’s taking every step to prevent history from repeating itself.
“I’m trying to take advantage of every opportunity this season to make sure that doesn’t happen again,” Gray said. “Missing the NFR last year for the first time in eight years lit a fire under me to go out and make the most of every ride. I’m trying to enjoy my career right now, and obviously still working toward the main goal of winning a world title.”
Gray emerged victorious from a loaded bareback riding field with an 85-point ride on C5 Rodeo Company’s Fabio. Before getting on Fabio, Gray had no clue what to expect.
“I hadn’t ever heard of him. I think they just bought him and he’s a new horse and that might have been the first PRCA rodeo he’s been to,” said Gray, who earned $2,280. “I knew I was going to have a shot on a good horse because C5 always has solid stock, but Fabio is definitely a great horse, and is the kind a guy likes to get on.”
Entering the weekend, Gray sat 12th in the world standings, despite only going to 17 rodeos. The veteran knows how to choose his spots on the rodeo trail, and says the win in Grassy Butte is a big pick-me-up.
“It’s nice to be able to get a check at any time, but right now it’s a slower time of the year as summer gets ready to kick off and the rodeo season really gets going,” he said. “It feels good to be riding well and making money, plus I feel about as good as I have in the last 10 years physically.”
The other winners at the $56,769 rodeo were all-around cowboy Beau Franzen ($1,755 in steer wrestling and team roping), steer wrestler Tyler Haugen (3.6 seconds), team ropers Clint Whipple and Terry Doka (6.6 seconds), saddle bronc riders Tyler Corrington and Troy Crowser (80 points each), tie-down roper Tyler Thiel (8.9 seconds), bull rider Beau Hill (86 points) and barrel racer Nikki Steffes (14.86 seconds).
Other weekend highlights
· Shane Suggs of Granbury, Texas, won the steer roping title at the Cowboy Capital ProRodeo in Bandera, Texas, with an average time of 42.7 seconds on three head. Granbury was one of many small Texas towns hit hard by a rash of tornadoes on May 15, leaving several dead and over 100 injured. Suggs placed in two rounds, including winning the second round, to earn a total of $2,230.
· Trevor Kastner continued his hot streak, winning the Will Rogers Stampede in Claremore, Okla. The 25-year-old Ardmore, Okla., bull rider topped Carr Pro Rodeo’s Fletch for 85 points and earned $1,740. Last week, Kastner won the Helldorado Days in Las Vegas and placed second at the Wrangler Champions Challenge in Redding, Calif. He sits third in the May 28 world standings, trailing only Josh Koschel and Tyler Smith.
· Riley and Brady Minor repeated as the team roping champions at The Last Stand Rodeo in Coulee City, Wash., with a 6.5-second run to earn $930 each. The win was the Ellensburg, Wash., brothers’ first victory together in the 2013 season, as each attempts to return to the WNFR after missing the event in 2012.
· Rhys Angland pulled double duty over the weekend. He first won the bull riding in Bandera, Texas, with an 84-point ride on Stace Smith Pro Rodeo’s Mr. Irrelevant, earning $1,035. Angland then took the saddle bronc riding title at Rodeo Killeen (Texas) with an 83-point effort on Andrew Rodeo’s Huckleberry, collecting $889.
4. News and notes from the rodeo trail
After eight years of fundraising, The Days of ’76 Museum in Deadwood, S.D., finally opened its doors on May 25. The grand opening featured speeches, songs, Native American blessings, clowns and carriages. The $5.5 million Days of ’76 Museum has already been designated an “American Treasure” by the National Park Service. “This new museum and its exhibits reflect the resilience of the many people, whether indigenous or immigrant, who carved out their lives in the Black Hills and the plains of western South Dakota,” said Mark Kopco, executive director of Deadwood History. “We’ve striven to make Deadwood a historic destination, and this museum is another large piece in that puzzle.” … The Tucson Rodeo Committee board of directors elected Deborah Barnett as its chairwoman. Barnett is the 20th chair and first woman to head the committee since its formation in 1925. Barnett, who began her affiliation with the Tucson Rodeo Committee as a volunteer in 1980, will serve a three-year term effective June 1 … Forty members and families of the 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division in Ft. Campbell, Ky., were invited to spend an evening at the Franklin Rodeo on May 17. Reserved seating tickets were donated by the Franklin Noon Rotary Club to P38 Inc., an organization dedicated to supporting servicemen and women from nearby Ft. Campbell … The Brown County Fair Association announced Delton Sweatman as the Brown County 50th Annual Rodeo Parade Grand Marshal. Sweatman’s involvement with the Brown County Youth Fair began in 1969, and he is still active with the association. His first youth fair was in 1970 … Buck Taylor, known for his role on the TV show Gunsmoke, is in Fort Smith, Ark., for the 80th Annual Old Fort Days Rodeo at Kay Rodgers Park. “This is pure American, bring the kids! Come by my booth, I’m real approachable; we’ll talk about Gunsmoke, and see some great athletes out there in the arena,” Taylor told KFSM Channel 5 in Fort Smith. It’s Taylor’s second year to attend the event; last year he served as grand marshal of the annual parade … Darlene Cox, of Kittitas Valley, Ore., was the winner of this year’s Ellensburg Rodeo poster competition, receiving a check for $300 for her winning entry, titled “Born to Rodeo.”
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“I don’t know what it will look like, but I’m excited to see it; it’s a different angle and view from what people are used to seeing. You hear of the extreme sports guys like surfers and snowboarders doing it, so this might be something neat to see from our point of view.”
