ARCADIA, Calif. (April 14, 2013)—Sister Kate, a California-bred 5-year-old full sister to 2006 Santa Anita Derby winner Brother Derek, pressed the pace in Sunday’s $70,000 Santa Lucia and overhauled Candrea and David Flores late to win by three quarters of a length under Corey Nakatani, getting 1 1/16 miles in 1:45.22.
Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer and owned by her breeder, Mary Caldwell, Sister Kate had been idle since winning a second-condition allowance at the same distance on Feb. 23 at Golden Gate Fields. She was off at odds of 8-1 in the five-horse Santa Lucia, for older fillies and mares.
“I was trying to put her in the race and let her assert herself as the speed, but David wanted to go on Baffert’s horse,” said Nakatani. “I opted to let him go ahead and go. I got to his outside to track him and it ended up working out for us.”
Sister Kate paid $18.40, $6.00 and $4.00. With the winner’s share of $55,200, her earnings now stand at $206,984. Her overall record is 14-5-2-4.
“It was a big win for this horse,” said Hollendorfer. “Corey was just supposed to get out of there running and then see what happened. That’s what he did and he rode a huge race…I just told Corey to get away from there running. If they gave him the lead, he was going to take it, but we thought somebody might go.”
Candrea, one of two Bob Baffert-trained entrants, was off at 6-1 and was game on the lead throughout, setting fractions of 23.22, 47.22, 1:11.72 and 1:37.95. She finished 3 ½ lengths in front of longshot Sister Glady Oh La and paid $6.40 and $4.60.
Ridden by Joe Talamo, Sister Glady Oh La was the biggest price in the field at 15-1 and she finished a head in front of Baffert’s Maker or Breaker, the heavy 3-5 favorite with Martin Garcia.
Sister Glady Oh La paid $3.80 to show.
In an unusual twist, the complete order of finish to the Santa Lucia was accomplished in saddle cloth order: 1-2-3-4-5.
Live racing resumes for the final week of the winter/spring meeting on Thursday, with first post time at 1 p.m.
