PRCA Weekly Press Release- April 1, 2013

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – As Kyle Lockett prepares to battle the best circuit cowboys in the country, he also has a duel looming in Oklahoma City.

The California Circuit roper will compete in both team and tie-down roping at the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo April 4-6, but the side story is just as compelling.

Lockett and Shane Erickson, of Terrebonne, Ore., are the only two competitors qualified for two events at the RNCFR. Per a new rule implemented in 2013, a cowboy must qualify in two events to be eligible for the all-around title.

“It’s neat that there’s only two of us to compete for it; it’s usually a lot more guys going for the all-around,” Lockett said. “It should make things more interesting. I’ve known Shane for quite a while and I used to see him in the Northwest every summer.”

For a 35-year-old cowboy who has been to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo seven times – and competed in plenty of pressure situations in his 16-year career – Lockett says the battle with Erickson for the all-around will just add to his focus.

“It’s definitely not a distraction and it’ll probably be better for me to know,” said Lockett, who is looking forward to the opportunity to earn a solid paycheck. “It’s a great event and if you go do a decent job, your chances of winning money are good. I just want to make some good runs and try to outlast the other guys.”

From 1997-2005, Lockett made it to the WNFR seven times as a team roper. With the birth of his first child, Shayla, shortly after his last trip to Las Vegas, Lockett became a family man. That resulted in staying closer to home and primarily being a circuit competitor.

“I haven’t rodeoed hard since 2005,” said Lockett, who has three children and another due April 17. “My girls are six (Shayla) and four (Georgia), and my boy (Sutton) is two. I’ve sure been keeping busy out here in California the last few years.”

Although he hasn’t competed full time or gone to bigger rodeos like he used to, Lockett says a chance to win big in Oklahoma City has him excited.

“It’s a great honor to go there, especially nowadays for me, because there aren’t a ton of chances for me to make a lot of money these days,” he said. “For me, this is a great deal; there are a lot of good guys there, but you aren’t competing against 70 or 80 other teams and I’m looking forward to it.”

If he is able to earn more money than Erickson and collect the saddle for the all-around championship, it’s something Lockett would cherish.

“That would have to be right up at the top of my accomplishments,” he said. “That’s something you would want to keep where people can see it.”

2. Billy Bob Brown winning at college and pro levels

LUBBOCK, Texas – Billy Bob Brown is a busy man these days.

The 21-year-old roper is working toward his degree in agriculture business at Tarleton State University, competing at a high level on the school’s rodeo team and acting as college rodeo’s Student President of the Southwest Region. Oh, and he’s winning PRCA rodeos.

Brown won the all-around and tie-down roping titles at the ABC ProRodeo in Lubbock, Texas, March 28-30, earning more than enough to fill his permit. He has a plan for his rodeo career, and it’s working out very well so far.

“I have another year until I graduate, and I’m going to get my degree before I turn pro and get my PRCA card,” said the Carbon, Texas, native. “After I graduate I’m going to try to rodeo and go back to the ranch and run cows with my dad.”

Brown’s run of 7.8 seconds was enough to edge Ryan Thibodeaux by .3 seconds and earn $1,972, nearly twice what he needed to fill his permit.

However, Brown has designs on making his rookie push in 2014 after he has a diploma in his hand.

“It was exciting to be able to win both the tie-down and all-around at a rodeo like this one; that was the biggest single check I’ve ever won,” he said. “My parents got to go with me and see me win, which was special.”

Brown’s college teammate, Richie Champion, took second in the bareback riding in Lubbock. It isn’t an unusual occurrence to see the college kids from Stephenville, Texas, doing well in PRCA rodeos.

“It’s nice to see that we can win at the college level, but we can also step up and win or place really high at the pro level,” said Brown, who currently leads the all-around, team roping header and tie-down roping standings in the Southwest Region. “I always like to see my college teammates getting it done at the highest level.”

Coming out of high school, Brown was an accomplished basketball player, garnering scholarship offers from Division II schools to shoot hoops instead of throwing loops.

He says as much as he loved basketball, it was never his dream like rodeoing was.

“I worked at rodeo my whole life growing up and it’s always been my dream,” he said. “You need to have a different kind of work ethic for rodeo than other sports. Doing multiple events, you have to be so dedicated, and I love that part of it. I want to win all-around world titles.”

Other winners at the $50,638 rodeo were bareback rider Ryan Gray (89 points), steer wrestlers Cody Pratt and Hunter Cure (4.0 seconds each), team ropers David Motes and Byron Wilkerson (5.3 seconds), saddle bronc rider Tyler Corrington (83 points), bull rider Elliot Jacoby (90 points) and barrel racer Lee Ann Rust (14.09 seconds).

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“I’m a huge rodeo fan, and what I’m doing when I’m behind the microphone, I would have been doing if I had dropped 20 bucks and sat next to you (in the stands).”
