Wellington, FL- March 26, 2013- James Lala, owner and operator of Wellington Quarantine, LLC, is an accomplished rider and trainer, a unique benefit for importers of mares and stallions facing quarantine time. Each year more and more clients are turning to Lala to make the best use of their CEM quarantine time as an acclimation and training opportunity. “My clients send their mares and stallions for quarantine and then often hire me to ride, train and condition them to be ready to show,” said Lala. “A perfect example is Sherri Crawford’s Carento, trained by Kitty Barker, who arrived from Europe. I rode and helped transition him from the jumper ring to the hunter ring. He made the transition perfectly and was just champion in the First Year Greens with Louise Serio in Week 8 at FTI WEF.”

This season, Lala has been lending his expertise to trainers Jill Knowles from the Chicago area and Wendy Arndt from Aiken, SC, by riding some of their clients’ young horses. For Jill Knowles, Lala earned a win on Lisa Greenspon’s Cesares in the Baby Green Hunters at FTI WEF during Week 8, after almost a five-year show ring hiatus.
“I have a high comfort level with James because of his great communication with me,” said Arndt. “He is very team-oriented and works well with me, as the trainer and with the owners. He is a great horseman and understands, while the horses are young, you want to challenge them but he also gets their limitations both mentally and physically. He takes the time.”
“James is a traditionalist and he has a great eye for a distance,” she continued. “He uses that to his advantage, and that’s an important quality when working with young horses. Accuracy is important. James also has a high level of confidence, which is most effective when training the young ones. Not to mention he has a wonderful sense of humor!”
Lala is especially skilled at bringing along young, talented horses to excel in the hunter and jumper rings. He is open to accepting young talent to stay with him through the summer months. Lala will spend the time to give them exposure to and take advantage of the varied experiences available in Wellington and the surrounding area. Clients can monitor progress of their horses through online video. Lala will communicate with clients when the youngsters feel ready to show and in many cases can deliver them directly to the show.
“Since moving to Wellington year round, I have become familiar with the unique opportunities South Florida has to offer,”explained Lala. “Within a 10-mile radius there are top-notch veterinarians, farriers and show grounds. After the winter circuit, developing horses in training can take advantage of local and unrated shows. I can take them to a show series within a one-hour radius and show in low classes for as little as $18 a class without overnight stays, braiding, daycare, hotel, etc. I can hack to multiple commercial stables in the area.”
The savings are potentially significant when compared to taking your young horses along on the road. In addition, the option of leaving the young horses at home could mean delay in their education. Many barns bring their best riding talent on the road, leaving no qualified rider to school young horses at home.
Lala is currently accepting a limited number of quality young horses in training for show or sales. In addition, he has several lovely horses for customer lessons and for clients in need of supplemental riding to stay in condition.
