MERCEDES, Texas – Logan Gledhill doesn’t see himself in a head-to-head battle with his old college rodeo buddies Jason Thomas and Kody Dollery. He’s just glad to be back in the Rookie of the Year conversation with them after a March 16 victory at the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show & Rodeo.
Gledhill, a construction management major at Sam Houston State University, constructed one rock solid steer wrestling run of 3.7 seconds at the Rio Grande Valley Arena. It earned him a check for $2,010 and moved him up to sixth place in the PRCA Resistol Rookie of the Year standings.
He was a half-second quicker than Clayton Hass in second place and six-tenths ahead of Justin Shaffer, another top candidate for the rookie award in bulldogging.
“Jason and Kody and I are all pretty good friends,” Gledhill said. “We all college rodeoed together and we all live within a few hours of each other. I’ve never thought of it as a race between us. We’re all just after the same goal.
“They know what I’m trying to accomplish and I know what they are working toward. That’s just rodeo. You are never really competing against the other guys. It’s just you trying to do the best you can each time with whatever steer you’ve drawn.”
Gledhill, 21, won the Ram Texas Circuit Finals Rodeo a year ago and earned nearly $20,000 during his two seasons as a permit holder, before buying his card last Sept. 19.
He earned a second-place check in Hempstead, Texas, last October but didn’t count it as one of his official results (steer wrestlers can only count 70 rodeos toward the world standings each year) and Gledhill has been shut out in limited PRCA appearances since then.
“My father (Tom) was a steer wrestler and it helps having someone who has been through all of this before and who can help you keep from getting too high or too low,” Gledhill said. “The quicker I learned that, the easier it got.
“You try not to dwell on the things that are out of your control. When you have a day (like Mercedes) it makes you appreciate how good it feels when things are going OK. It reminds you what you are working toward and keeps you focused on what you need to be doing.”
The other champions in the $97,710 Mercedes rodeo were bareback rider Evan Jayne (85 points), team ropers Logan Olson and Matt Kasner (3.8 seconds), saddle bronc riders Spencer Wright and Sterling Crawley (83 points each), tie-down roper Tuf Cooper (7.3 seconds), bull rider Corey Navarre (87 points) and barrel racer Benette Little (14.84 seconds).
2. Campbell enjoys sweet ride in Mercedes
MERCEDES, Texas – Only minutes after Cody Campbell completed his ride on Cowboy Coffee, Campbell’s family had the video up on his Facebook page. Who could blame them? It was one of those nights that stay with a cowboy for a long, long time.
Campbell’s 92-point ride on Lancaster & Pickett’s Pro Rodeo’s Cowboy Coffee
www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=572161966149795 wasn’t just good enough for the win at the Xtreme Bulls Division 2 event and a $4,230 check, but it was also the highest score in the Oregon cowboy’s eight-year professional career.
More than that, it was the highest score anybody’s ever had on Cowboy Coffee, the bull that took Shane Proctor to a Round 8 win at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo last December and had an 82.35 percent buck-off rate in 2012.
Cowboy Coffee had carried riders to scores of 91-points three times before, including Chandler Bownds in the finals of this same event a year ago.
It was the surest sign yet that Campbell, a native of Summerville, Ore., who now resides in Eufaula, Okla., is all the way back from surgery on his left (free) arm that sidelined him for three months at the end of last year.
Surgeons repaired the damage with a plate and 11 screws.
Stormy Wing earned $3,243 by finishing second with a score of 88.5 points on Wild Card Rodeo’s Midnight and Kanin Asay was third with an 87-point ride on Wild Card Rodeo’s Rawhide. Asay’s earnings of $2,397 were enough to move into second place in the world standings, ahead of injured reigning World Champion Cody Teel, and extended his lead in the Xtreme Bulls Tour standings over Josh Koschel.
• Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: J.W. Harris needs a big score to win a rodeo on the final day and comes up with a 90-pointer to make it work. This time it was the Goliad County Fair PRCA Rodeo in Goliad, Texas, and Harris came up with exactly 90 points on Stace Smith Pro Rodeos’ Thunder Road to claim the winner’s check of $1,104. It was Harris’ PRCA-leading 70th ride of 90 points or better (his personal best is a 96-pointer at the 2006 Reno, Nev., Xtreme Bulls) and it came at the expense of Wesley Silcox, who is second on the PRCA list with a career total of 47 rides of 90 points or better and who thought he had Goliad wrapped up with an 88. The capper to this? Before March 17, Thunder Road had never been ridden, a career 78-0. The other champions at this $39,469 rodeo were bareback rider Austin Foss (87 points), rookie steer wrestler Kody Dollery (3.6 seconds), team ropers Kaleb Driggers and Kinney Harrell (4.1 seconds), saddle bronc rider Justin Caylor (85 points), tie-down roper Jason Schaffer (7.6 seconds) and barrel racer Cathy Grant (16.15 seconds).
• Team roper Troy Hudson of Ocala, Fla., was the only repeat champion at the March 15-17 Florida Gateway ProRodeo in Lake City … well, sort of. A year ago, Hudson heeled for Brent Aldoff when they won the event in 5.0 seconds. This time he headed for his dad, John, and they beat out 2011 Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo champions Ross Lowry and Stephen Britnell with a 5.3-second run.

3. News and notes from the rodeo trail
Driving into Kountze, Texas, from either side of town, motorists encounter a billboard posted as a tribute to the town’s favorite son, World Champion Bull Rider Cody Teel.
The local chamber of commerce erected the signs earlier this month and held a banquet in Teel’s honor on March 5. “You couldn’t ask for a finer kid to represent this (Hardin) county,” Judge Billy Caraway told the Beaumont Enterprise. “And every time they announce something he’s doing, they announce Kountze, Texas, and we’re proud of that.” … A record 685 teams competed for nearly $1 million at the March 8-9 George Strait Team Roping Classic in San Antonio, Texas, and nobody made more of the opportunity than two-time Wrangler NFR qualifier Garrett Tonozzi of Fruita, Colo. Tonozzi actually finished first (with Dugan Kelly)and second (with York Gill) to finish with $183,485 in cash, a new truck and a pile of other prizes. Kelly was awarded $131,060 and a new truck … For the third consecutive year, the Buffalo Bill Rodeo will host a free PRCA Championship Rodeo Camp from 4-8:30 p.m. on March 22 in Lexington, Neb. The camp is open to anyone 8 or older who wants to learn to ride bareback horses, saddle broncs or bulls. “It’s about the bigger picture, promoting pro rodeos,” Jack Morris, co-chairman of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo told the North Platte Bulletin, “and, like any other sport, if you want awesome basketball players, you have to start them when they’re in grade school. It’s a mentoring opportunity, to help the kids who are interested in pursuing rodeo.” To register, visitwww.prorodeo.com/youthrodeo.aspx … A proposed land swap between McLennan County and the Waco (Texas) Independent School District would allow the Extraco Events Center – home of the All American ProRodeo Finals each October – to add a new arena and potentially hold more events, officials told the Waco Tribune. The $1.5 million project is part of a $20 million master plan approved three years ago to upgrade the center complex. The center would finance and build the expanded stall barn and turn it over to the county once construction is complete, perhaps as early as January 2014, said Wes Allison, president and CEO of the Extraco Events Center. It would supplement the existing arena in the Heart O’ Texas Coliseum and Extraco Show Pavilion … Dama “Red” Schenk, who served as chairman of the Red River Rodeo Queen Contest in Wichita Falls, Texas, for 30 years (1964-94), died on Feb. 24 at her home in Scotland, Texas, at the age of 82. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, former Red River Rodeo chairman Cletus Schenk, and their four children, Randy, LeighAnn, John and Cyndi … Former PRCA bull riderDavid Loftis, 55, died at his home in Pioneer, Calif., on March 10. He is survived by his wife, Bev, and their sons, Jon,Matt and Dustin. Memorial contributions may be made to the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund, 101 Pro Rodeo Drive, Colorado Springs, CO 80919 … Ken Dennis, a volunteer at the Reno (Nev.) Rodeo for half a century, has donated a 300-pound, limited-edition bronze Frederic Remington sculpture titled Coming Through the Rye to the Reno Rodeo Association for display in a future Reno Rodeo museum. “The museum has been a dream for a long time,” Dennis, 90, told the Reno Gazette-Journal, “so I thought this would be a good addition.” … Shane Proctor, the 2011 world champion bull rider, is returning home to Grand Coulee, Wash., April 2-3 to preside over a bull and steer riding school bearing his name at the Nespelem rodeo grounds … PRCA timed-event hand Cole Dorenkamp will be the featured instructor at the Lamar (Colo.) Community College rodeo clinic March 23-24 at the LCC outdoor arena.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“I have three kids, so I’m constantly running with them – I’m the Little League coach, the basketball coach. They keep me plenty busy.”
– Stran Smith, the 2008 world champion tie-down roper, on what he does when he is not on the road competing in rodeo.
