High scores and fast times set pace at San Antonio Rodeo

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 7, 2013) — If the first performance of the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo is any indication, fans at the AT&T Center are in for a big treat.

The night started out with three-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier Matt Bright from Azle, Texas, winning the bareback riding. Bright rode Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Fire’s Easy for 83 points and earned $1,965. He had a one-point edge over the next three men who all scored 82.

New Mexico athletes have already won nearly $7,000 here. Cody Taton and his brother-in-law Taos Muncy, both living in Corona, N.M., took first and second in the saddle bronc riding respectively. Taton rode Beutler and Son Rodeo’s Full Deck for 84. He grew up and lived in South Dakota prior to marrying Muncy’s younger sister Jordan. The duo now travels together.

Muncy holds the arena record here with a 92-point ride on Kesler Rodeo’s Cool Alley in 2008. He scored 83 Thursday night to earn $1,474.

In the women’s barrel racing Sabrina Ketcham from Yeso, N.M., was first with 13.85 seconds winning $1,965. She was followed by Sydni Blanchard from Albuquerque with 13.90 who earned $1,474.

There is a reason that bull riding is traditionally the last event at a rodeo. It can be the most exciting and having a three-time world champion on the roster certainly adds to that. J.W. Harris from Mullin, Texas, earned his gold buckles for being the best 2008 – 2010. He had a share of the title here in 2009 and would like to make the victory lap again this year. He rode Beutler and Son Rodeo’s Gangbuster for 90 points and $1,965.

All of these contestants have their second of three appearances on Friday at 7:30. Their money will accumulate through the three rounds to advance them to the semi-final
