Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo winding down

FORT WORTH, Texas (Feb. 6, 2013) — With just five more performances left before the championship finals at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo contestants are either making plans to come back here or headed to other rodeos.

Jared Smith, from Cross Plains, Texas, is one of those contestants. He moved into a tie for second in the overall standings in bareback riding thanks in part to his performance in the Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum on Wednesday. He is now making plans to be here Saturday and hoping to win one of the traditional buckles awarded to champions here. Getting a big check won’t hurt either.

Smith took the lead in the first round of bareback riding Tuesday night with an 83, came back and got on two more horses Wednesday for 78 and 79 points at the matinee and evening performance. Smith’s 240 on three head ties him with Ryan Gray from Cheney, Wash. Both of these men moved through the ranks of high school then college rodeo before making names for themselves in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.

Gray won the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) bareback riding championship in 2004. Kaycee Feild, from Spanish Fork, Utah, who leads the standings here with 245 points, won the NIRA title in 2008. Smith was part of the men’s championship teams in 2007 and 2009.

The 2011 college all-around champion Winn Ratliff, from Leesville, La., is in fifth place with 234 points.

Ty Breuer, from Mandan, N.D., moved into eighth place in the overall standings in bareback riding with 228 points, so he is waiting to see if he remains in the top 12 to qualify for the finals here. Breuer was the 2010 college champion. He is followed by the 2011 NIRA champ, J.R. Vezain from Cowley, Wyo., with 225 points. With the exception of Breuer, all of these men have qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo at least once and Feild is a two-time and the reigning world champion.

There are two more sets of bareback riders who have three rounds of competition left. The steer wrestlers, tie-down ropers and barrel racers are in their second round trying to make it back for the finals. Saddle bronc riders, bull riders and team ropers will be making their first and second appearances. Total times and scores are added together to determine final round qualifiers.

There are two performances of the World’s Original Indoor Rodeo® at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo on Thursday at 2 and 7:30 p.m.
