PRCA Weekly Press Release Sept. 24, 2012

1. Whitney leads band of last-minute qualifiers for Omaha

Usually when a guy gets bumped out of the field for the Justin Boots Championships at the last moment there is anguish and bitter disappointment. Clayton Savage is fine with it. He wasn’t going to go to Omaha for the $637,188 rodeo even if he had qualified. He’s getting married next weekend.

Savage had long ago cleared off his schedule for the last week in September so he could tie the knot with his high school sweetheart, Catherine Mosher, at Grace Bible Baptist Church in Casper, Wyo. Nothing was going to interfere with that.

“I guess I didn’t really think about (when Omaha was scheduled),” Savage said. “What would I have done if I had qualified? I guess I would have doctor released out or just not entered. Bull riding isn’t everything.”

It turned out to be a moot point. Cody Whitney saw to that. Whitney earned his spot at the QwestCenter straight up. He won the Pasadena (Texas) Livestock Show & Rodeo with an 89-point ride at the final performance Sept. 20 and tied for fourth place at the Four States Fair Rodeo in Texarkana, Ark.

His weekend earnings of $3,710 moved Whitney from 14th to 10th in the world standings and bumped Savage – who had entered the week 12th in the world standings – out of the last spot in the Omaha lineup by nearly $2,800.

“I’m glad to help him out (of the potential conflict),” Whitney said with a laugh.

Whitney was one of only three contestants to parlay success in this past weekend’s rodeos into a spot in the Justin Boots Championships.

Brock Hanson made it into the team roping field as a header after he and partner Ryan Motes won the Amarillo (Texas) Tri-State Fair & Rodeo (Motes was already safely qualified) for $3,023. Charly Crawford was bumped from the last spot by a margin of $580, which means that he and his partner, Jim Ross Cooper, are the first alternates to the Omaha field.

The third new qualifier requires a footnote. Cole Elshere got into the saddle bronc riding field by sharing the title at the New Mexico State Fair Rodeo in Albuquerque with Bradley Harter and finishing second in Texarkana to bump Sterling Crawley into 13th place. But Crawley will remain in the QwestCenter lineup as a replacement for the injured world standings leader Wade Sundell.

There were a couple of near misses along the way, too. Steer wrestler Beau Clark moved ahead of K.C. Jones on Sept. 20 with a fourth-place finish in Pasadena, Texas, and that held up until Jones – despite competing with a fractured fibula head in his right knee – finished fourth in Albuquerque on Sept. 23 to recapture his spot.

And then there was bareback rider Brian Bain. He had a sore right (riding) hand after competing at the Pendleton (Ore.) Round-Up, so he took what he called “a calculated risk,” and doctor-released out of Pasadena and Albuquerque.

Bain knew that sixth-ranked Jessy Davis would be unable to compete at Omaha due to injury, meaning that two competitors would have to pass him in order for him to lose his berth in the championships. It almost happened. Casey Colletti finished just $138 back of Bain and Justin McDaniel, who earned checks at four rodeos (including a win in El Paso, Texas), was another $268 back.

“It worked out OK in the end,” Bain said, “and I’m hoping the extra rest will pay off for me in Omaha.”

With Davis a lineup scratch, Colletti is in the field in the No. 12 spot and McDaniel is first alternate.

The big thing about making the show in Omaha is that $637,188 purse and the opportunity that provides for contestants to secure their spot in the $6.125 million Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

With maximum potential earnings of $33,161 (achievable by winning the first round, second round, semifinal, final and average), there is also a great chance for a contestant to get hot on one weekend and position himself for a gold buckle run in December.

For somebody like Whitney, who missed seven big Fourth of July rodeos after a bull at Red Lodge, Mont., broke his foot, having things fall in place like this at the end of the regular season is the sweetest sort of relief.

“I’m just glad I got off my tail and did my job,” Whitney said. “If they had done this the old way with eligibility for Omaha based on Wrangler Million Dollar Tour points, I wouldn’t have even made it to (the playoffs in) Puyallup, let alone Omaha.

“Winning in Cheyenne (Wyo.) really helped and I’ve competed pretty well down the stretch.”

The win in Pasadena was his second in five days (he had a win in St. George, Utah, on Sept. 15), and third since the injury, as Whitney has clawed his way up from 24th two months ago to the top 10.

“After Pasadena,” Whitney said, “I got a text from the people at the MGM Grand in Vegas (who sponsor him) saying, ‘Congratulations, 75 more days until we get to hang out together.’ It’s great to have them on your side.”

• Trey Benton III has achieved his major goals for the 2012 season – winning the PRCA Resistol Bull Riding Rookie of the Year Award and qualifying for the Wrangler NFR in his first season – but he’s not done yet.

Although hindered by a knee injury, Benton plans to compete at the Justin Boots Championships, Sept. 27-29 in Omaha, Neb., in pursuit of the record for money won by a rookie during the regular season.

Fellow bull rider Steve Woolsey holds the record with the $113,090 he earned in 2005 and Benton is third in the world this season with $108,970.

“I want to break that record; that’s my main goal now,” Benton said Sept. 24.

Benton has been out of action since he suffered an injury to his right knee when he was bucked off Do or Die Rodeo’s Baskin’s Buckmaster at the Tri-State Rodeo in Fort Madison, Iowa, on Sept. 6.

An MRI performed on Sept. 11 revealed a torn ACL ligament, torn meniscus, and strained MCL ligament in Benton’s right knee. He’s scheduled to have surgery performed by Dr. Tandy Freeman in Dallas, on Dec. 19, the week following the Wrangler NFR, to repair the damage.

“I’ve been wearing the brace they fitted for me, and trying to be careful, but I’m feeling pretty good,” Benton said. “I’m too close to that record to let it go now, and I don’t like the idea of losing any more ground in the standings either.”

• ProRodeoLive.com will air coverage of the Justin Boots Championships each evening from the QwestCenter, starting at 6:45 p.m. (CT). PRCA announcer Steve Kenyon, who founded and owns ProRodeoLive.com, will be the lead commentator on the live webcast.

• Great American Country (DISH Network 165, DirecTV 326) will televise its coverage of the rodeo at 10 p.m. (ET) on Oct. 9, and it will be rebroadcast three times – at 2 a.m. (ET) on Oct. 10, at 10 p.m. on Nov. 6 and at 2 a.m. on Nov. 7.

2. DeMoss’ bid for Linderman Award falls short in Texarkana

It was an emotional roller coaster of a weekend for Cody DeMoss.

On Sept. 20, DeMoss moved a small step closer to his first world championship in saddle bronc riding with a win at the Pasadena (Texas) Livestock Show & Rodeo. On Sept. 22 he fell just short in his bid for a first Linderman Award.

Already (well) qualified in the saddle bronc riding with $108,397 and team roping ($2,182), DeMoss needed to finish third or better in the bareback riding at the Four States Fair Rodeo in Texarkana, Ark., to qualify for the Linderman Award by surpassing $1,000 in a third event.

He finished out of the money on Wrangler National Finals Rodeo horse Bi Polar from Classic Pro Rodeo.

“I had a chance to win the Linderman once before (in 2009), when I went to Texarkana needing a couple hundred bucks in the team roping and couldn’t get it done,” DeMoss said.

With DeMoss’ departure from the race, Kyle Thomson is the presumptive winner of the Linderman; it would make him the first Canadian to claim that symbol of rodeo versatility in more than 20 years.

Kyle Whitaker, who has won the Linderman a record six times, was prepared to take one last shot at qualifying for the title this weekend at the American Royal in Kansas City, until an MRI showed he had a torn right pectoral muscle.

He underwent surgery on Sept. 24 in O’Neill, Neb. (about 25 miles from his home in Chambers), and will be out about six months.

“I’m hoping to be back in time for San Antonio (in February),” Whitaker said, while being prepped for surgery. “It’s sure not the way I wanted the season to end. It’s such bad timing.”

Whitaker was a strong contender for his first Wrangler NFR as a steer wrestler all season and was in 19th place at the time of the injury.

For DeMoss, whatever disappointment he might feel in falling short in the Linderman Award race will simply be rechanneled into his primary goal – earning a saddle bronc riding gold buckle.

DeMoss is healthy and has been riding well in recent weeks. His win at Pasadena allowed him to move past Jesse Wright into second place in the saddle bronc riding world standings and he trails Wade Sundell (who is sidelined with an injury) by just $5,639.

DeMoss’ 90-point ride on Frontier Rodeo’s Too Cool in Pasadena was the highest score ever achieved on that horse and held up to edge Bradley Harter by a single point.

“Heath Stewart of Frontier Rodeo has never steered me wrong on any horse I’ve ever asked about,” DeMoss said. “His word is good with me. He told me to just, ‘Lean back and spur the snot out of him.’ And that’s what I did. He really bucked and got up under himself. It was a fun ride. Real fun.”

DeMoss knows well that that elusive first gold buckle – he has finished second in the world standings four times – won’t be decided until the last ride of the last performance of the Dec. 6-15 Wrangler NFR.

“It should be interesting, a lot of fun to watch,” DeMoss said. “It’s anybody’s game at the NFR once you get there. One year I went from 15th to third in the world standings. Anybody who gets hot and has a good 10 days can win it all.”

The other champions at Pasadena’s Ross Kelly Arena were bareback rider Danny Webb (86 points), steer wrestler Shayde Etherton (9.1 seconds on two head), team ropers Camish Jennings and Tommy Zuniga (11.5 seconds on two head), tie-down roper Seth Childers (18.1 seconds on two head), bull rider Cody Whitney (89 points) and barrel racer Savanah Reeves (15.96 seconds). Caleb Smidt won the all-around title with $2,127 in team roping and tie-down roping, extending his career record for money won on a permit to $61,410 with two rodeos remaining; he bought his card on Sept. 19 and will begin his rookie season on Oct. 1.

• There could be quite an interesting battle shaping up for the 2013 Bull Riding Rookie of the Year Award. Cooper Davis, 18, earned $9,975 this past weekend with wins at the New Mexico State Fair Rodeo in Albuquerque, and the Oklahoma City Xtreme Bulls Division 2 event to push his season earnings to $34,927. That’s the fifth-highest single-season total in history on a permit and all the more impressive because Davis didn’t buy his permit until his 18th birthday on March 23. The one-season record is $38,470 held by Joe Frost, who has one last rodeo on his permit this weekend in Anadarko, Okla. Davis, a freshman at Panola College (Carthage, Texas), will be competing in New Braunfels, Texas, and in Anadarko, in what figures to be a preview of coming attractions. Frost has already bought his card and Davis is planning to buy his next month to begin his rookie season.

• Brazile watch: Trevor Brazile was born in Amarillo, Texas, and the Amarillo Tri-State Fair & Rodeo has always been good to him. His all-around title there (with total earnings of $6,460) this past weekend was his third in six years and the three-head average title he won in steer roping was his second there. He enters the final week of the regular season leading the all-around and team roping-heading standings and second in the steer roping to Cody Lee. “Being born here,” Brazile told Amarillo Globe-News, “this is one rodeo I like to hit. I have a lot of family and friends here. The best thing about Amarillo is the people.”

3. Dodge City hosting PRCA rodeo camp

DODGE CITY, Kan. – The Dodge City Roundup Rodeo is hosting a PRCA Championship Rodeo Camp from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at Roundup Arena. The free training is set for participants of all abilities who are 8 years old or older.

“PRCA Championship Rodeo Camps are great for beginners and have proven to be very beneficial for advanced riders,” said Julie Jutten, who is with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s industry outreach department. “If you are new to the sport, the camp will get you off to the right start, which will help your long-term success in the sport.”

The curriculum includes an introduction to all three roughstock events – bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding – and will cover the basics: safety and fundamentals, livestock safety, injury prevention, tips from professionals, chute procedures, riding equipment overview, goal setting and an introduction to the PRCA.

“We’re very excited to be part of this program that is designed to help teach people about rodeo,” said Dr. R.C. Trotter, chairman of the Roundup committee. “I think this is an outstanding way to draw young people to the sport and teach them the skills they might need if they want to pursue rodeo in their future.

“Hopefully we’ll have a number of the campers who come back and compete at Roundup in just a few years.”

Students can register in all three roughstock events and may do so online at http://prorodeo.com/youthrodeo_form.aspx. Students also can register by calling Jutten at 719.304.1471.

“The classroom will include sessions on preventing and managing injuries, which will prolong careers, and understanding the PRCA, which will ease an athlete’s transition into ProRodeo,” Jutten said. “The camps are free and a great chance to learn from the best of the PRCA.”

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Nobody can make a rodeo great only with their own pen. You can’t do a decent-sized rodeo without help. We own 200 horses and we could put this rodeo on ourselves, but it wouldn’t be nearly as good without asking others to bring their best.”

— Eight-time PRCA Stock Contractor of the Year Stace Smith telling the Amarillo Globe-News about the approach he takes in producing the Amarillo (Texas) Tri-State Fair & Rodeo.

5. News and notes from the rodeo trail

Johnny Emmons, a five-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier in tie-down roping (1989, 1998, 2001-03), has been named to succeed Mike Brown as the head rodeo coach at Weatherford (Texas) College. Emmons has served as Brown’s assistant coach for the past seven years and the Coyotes have qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo every year over that span. “Johnny’s ready,” Brown told the Weatherford Democrat. “He’s learning a lot. He’s got enough experience to keep us going strong.” Brown, 60, is stepping down from coaching to devote more time to teaching agriculture … Bareback rider Tim Kent, 26, was released from a hospital after being treated for a head injury he suffered Sept. 23 at the Shawnee Mountain PRCA Rodeo in Shawnee on Delaware, Pa. “The horse stepped on him,” pickup man Marty Barnes, of Barnes PRCA Rodeo, told the Pocono (Pa.) Record. “He must have hit him in the head at least once since he was knocked unconscious.” Kent was life-flighted to Lehigh Valley Hospital where he was released on Sept. 24 … The California Rodeo has donated more than $3,600 to the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System in Salinas, after another year of participating in Wrangler’s Tough Enough to Wear Pink (TETWP) Campaign. Funds were raised through ticket sales on the Thursday night of the rodeo, tip collection on-site during the rodeo and through a partnership with sponsor Swenson & Silacci Flowers. In June and July, customers could visit a special page on their website, www.swensonandsilacci.com and send a survivor a pink arrangement; 20 percent of the cost of the arrangement was donated to the TETWP campaign … Helped by the biggest rodeo crowd in more than five years, the West Texas Fair & Rodeo in Abilene was 3.5 percent above projected revenue this year at $207,500 … The American Bus Association has designated the Feb. 7-24 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo as one of the top 100 events in North America for 2013 because “it offers excellent entertainment value to both tour groups and individual travelers from around the world.”
