Amazombie, The Factor Top Fast Five For Crosby

Amazombie, the 2011 Breeders’ Cup and Eclipse Award sprint champion faces 2011 Del Mar Sprinter of the Meeting The Factor and three others in the Grade I $300,000 Bing Crosby Stakes on Sunday (July 29) at Del Mar.

Amazombie, a 6-year-old California-bred gelding co-owned and trained by Bill Spawr, has 11 wins from 26 career starts and more than $1.7 million in career earnings. Last fall, the son of Northern Afleet out of the In Excess mare Wilshe Amaze followed up a victory in the Grade I Ancient Title at Santa Anita with one in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint and was later voted the Eclipse Award signifying preeminence in the division in North America.

Prior to the Ancient Title, Amazombie was third in the Bing, Crosby which was the first of three straight starts at his preferred 6-furlong distance.

Three starts into a 2012 campaign targeted for a Breeders’ Cup Sprint defense on Sunday, November 3 at Santa Anita, Amazombie has a victory in the 6 ½ furlong Potrero Grande in April at Santa Anita and runner-up in the 7-furlong Churchill Downs Stakes on Kentucky Derby Day as highlights.

The Factor, owned by Bolton and Fog City Stable and trained by Bob Baffert, nailed down Del Mar’s sprint honors for 2011 with a win in the 7-furlong Pat O’Brien Stakes.

The Factor was first, and Amazombie third in the 7-furlong San Carlos Handicap at Santa Anita on February 12, the 2012 debut for both. The Factor was sixth of 12 in the $2 million Dubai Golden Shaheen in March in the United Arab Emirates and second to Camp Victory in the Triple Bend at Hollywood Park on June 12.
