Reigning World Champions Win Spurs at Reno Rodeo

RENO, NEV., June 25, 2011 — After nine days and nights of competition, the best of the best were crowned at the $488,238 Reno Rodeo.

Two of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) reigning world champions earned titles. Kaycee Feild, from Payson, Utah earned his second set when he tied with Ryan Gray from Cheney, Wash., in the bareback riding. They each had 249 points on three rides. Feild, who is the reigning world champion, also earned the championship here in 2009. He was the high money winner with $8,973. Gray earned $7,711 for his first title here. He also got to take the spurs while Feild will have to wait while they make his.

The big money winner here is also the reigning world champion in tie-down roping. Tuf Cooper from Decatur, Texas, roped and tied three calves in 25.3 seconds to win $12,834. Cooper is currently seventh in the PRCA world standings, so the money he won here should move him up in the world standings.

All of the winners here are going to use the momentum and confidence they gained going into the ever busy Fourth of July rodeo season known as “Cowboy Christmas.” Among those is Cody DeMoss, from Heflin, La., who won his third pair of spurs here. DeMoss also competed in team roping here in 2005 when he won the saddle bronc riding and all-around titles.

After sustaining a broken shoulder at last year’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR), he came back at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo in Denver and won the saddle bronc riding championship. He is looking for his ninth WNFR qualification and would like nothing better than to win his first world championship.

“Reno is one of my favorite rodeos, and I always look forward to coming here,” DeMoss said. “Winning Denver got my winter season off to a great start. Hopefully winning Reno will do the same thing for my summer.”

Half of the team roping championship will stay in Nevada for the first time since 1953 when Bige and Bud Duncan won. Jade Corkill who lives just an hour away at Fallon did the heeling for Kaleb Driggers from Albany, Ga., to win the title. They were the high team back and basically needed a solid run to get the title. They did just that, stopping the clock in 5.6 seconds to place third in the final round and get the championship with a total of 17.2 on three runs. They each earned $10,605.

There was a near capacity crowd at the final performance despite unseasonably cool and windy weather. Plans for the 2013 Reno Rodeo are already underway.
