(Sunday, March 16, 2025)<\/b>\u00a0<\/b>\u2013 Seven weeks in advance of the $5 million Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade I),\u00a0Journalism<\/b>, powerful winner of the San Felipe (GII), closed as the 5-1 favorite in Pool 5 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW) with Fountain of Youth winner\u00a0Sovereignty<\/b>\u00a0the 7-1 second betting choice.<\/p>\n

In the lone Kentucky Oaks Future Wager, which was conducted concurrently with the KDFW Pool 5, unbeaten Rachel Alexandra (GII) winner\u00a0Good Cheer<\/b>\u00a0closed as the 2-1 favorite over Las Virgenes (GIII) winner\u00a0Tenma<\/b>\u00a0(13-1)\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0\u201cAll Other 3-Year-Old Fillies\u201d<\/b>\u00a0(14-1).<\/p>\n

Betting on all future wagers over the three-day period, which included an Oaks\/Derby Future Double, was $593,696, a healthy 29.6% gain compared to last year\u2019s $458,269.<\/p>\n

Champion 2-year-old and Robert B. Lewis (GIII) winner\u00a0Citizen Bull<\/b>\u00a0closed as the 9-1 third betting option and was followed by\u00a0\u201cAll Other 3-Year-Olds\u201d<\/b>\u00a0(10-1); Rebel (GII) winner\u00a0Coal Battle<\/b>\u00a0(14-1); San Felipe runner-up\u00a0Barnes<\/b>\u00a0(15-1); fast debut winner\u00a0Cornucopian<\/b>\u00a0(15-1); and Sunland Derby runner-up\u00a0Caldera<\/b>\u00a0(18-1).<\/p>\n

Total handle for the KDFW pool \u2013 the fifth of six scheduled wagering pools in advance of the 1 \u00bc-mile Kentucky Derby \u2013 was $430,006 ($328,063 in the Win pool and $102,003 in Exactas), an increase of 28.5% from last year\u2019s $334,581 ($246,076 in the Win pool and $85,506 in Exactas).<\/p>\n

Betting on the Oaks Future Wager totaled $79,974 ($58,629 in the Win pool and $21,345 in Exactas), a 14.7% jump versus 2024\u2019s $69,717 ($48,334 in the Win pool and $21,384 in Exactas).<\/p>\n

The Oaks\/Derby Double, which requires bettors to correctly select the winners of both the $1.5 million Longines Kentucky Oaks (GI) on May 2 and the next day\u2019s Derby, handled $83,716, a 55.1% increase compared to last year\u2019s $53,971.<\/p>\n

Through the first five pools, a total of $1,847,627 has been bet on Derby future wagers, a 10.2% increase from last year\u2019s $1,676,353.<\/p>\n

The year\u2019s sixth and final Kentucky Derby Future Wager pool is set for Thursday, April 3 through Saturday, April 5.
