His hope this year is\u00a0<b>Sierra Leone<\/b>, who he owns in partnership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 On the Longines Kentucky Oaks front,\u00a0<b>Willis Horton Racing<\/b>\u2019s\u00a0<b>Tapit Jenallie<\/b>\u00a0was declared out of the race, allowing\u00a0<b>Courtlandt Farms<\/b>\u2019\u00a0<b>Our Pretty Woman<\/b>\u00a0to draw in off the also-eligible list for trainer\u00a0<b>Steve Asmussen<\/b>.\u00a0<b>Joel Rosario<\/b>\u00a0has the mount.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Because of the first post time of 10:30 a.m. (all times Eastern) for Friday\u2019s 13-race program, training hours will be abbreviated in the morning. The track will be open for training from 5:15-7:15 followed by a harrow break with the 7:45-8 window open for Oaks and Derby horses only.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><b>CATALYTIC<\/b>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<b>Tami Bobo, Julie Davies\u00a0<\/b>and<b>\u00a0George Isaacs\u2019 Catalytic<\/b>\u00a0went to the track Thursday shortly after the start of the 7:30 a.m. training period for Oaks and Derby horses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 With regular exercise rider\u00a0<b>Olaf Hernandez\u00a0<\/b>aboard, the Florida Derby (GI) runner-up galloped a mile-and-a-half for trainer\u00a0<b>Saffie Joseph Jr.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u201cHe also stood in the starting gate before his gallop,\u201d said Joseph, who\u2019s waiting to see the weather to map out his Friday training plans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s undecided,\u201d Joseph said. \u201cHe\u2019s scheduled to go to the track. If it rains, he might walk tomorrow. If the track\u2019s good, he\u2019ll go to the track. If the track\u2019s nasty, he\u2019ll just walk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\"><b>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jose Ortiz<\/b>\u00a0will ride the lightly raced colt in the Derby from post 5. The son of Gun Runner kept up that trend Thursday morning, coming out during the 7:30 a.m. training period and getting into another solid gallop twice around the Churchill Downs oval.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As has also been standard, stablemate and fellow Kentucky Derby entrant\u00a0<b>Domestic Product\u00a0<\/b>emerged after his comrade put in his morning work, coming onto the track just after 8 a.m. and galloping about 1 1\/2 miles under the watch of trainer\u00a0<b>Chad Brown<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cObviously we\u2019re getting into the last couple days of training here,\u201d Brown said. \u201cMy Oaks horses are done, the Derby horses will have one more routine gallop tomorrow. Sierra Leone looks super and I feel (Domestic Product) is flying under the radar a bit too. I was very pleased with both gallops. These horses both have so much energy and they\u2019re moving well. In my position as a trainer that\u2019s really all you can ask for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 On hand to watch Sierra Leone Thursday morning was one of Brown\u2019s top clients,\u00a0<b>Peter Brant<\/b>, who owns the colt along with\u00a0<b>Mrs. John Magnier<\/b>,\u00a0<b>Michael Tabor<\/b>,\u00a0<b>Derrick Smith<\/b>,<b>\u00a0Brook Smith,<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>Westerberg<\/b>.\u00a0Brant owned a share of Claiborne Farm&#8217;s 1984 Kentucky Derby winner\u00a0<b>Swale\u00a0<\/b>and has been impressed by Sierra Leone from Day One, as evidenced by the colt\u2019s $2.3 million price tag as a yearling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cHe is a special horse and I\u2019m confident that he should be here,\u201d Brant said. \u201cIt is a difficult race (the Kentucky Derby). You have to have a good trip, you have to have a good rider, it\u2019s all very complicated. But I\u2019m just proud of him to be here. It\u2019s one of those situations where an outstanding individual like him comes along and he runs to what he looks like, that doesn\u2019t always happen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cA lot of times you buy an expensive horse like that and they can\u2019t run. We\u2019re very, very lucky he\u2019s made it this far and Chad has done a fantastic job. He wouldn\u2019t bring the horse here if he didn\u2019t feel he was up to it. We\u2019re looking forward to this race but also looking forward to the future of taking care of this horse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><b>DORNOCH\/SOCIETY MAN \u2013\u00a0<\/b>Though he considered giving the colt a walk day Thursday, trainer\u00a0<b>Danny Gargan<\/b>\u00a0opted to send Remsen (GII) and Fountain of Youth Stakes (GII) winner\u00a0<b>Dornoch<\/b>\u00a0out for a jog early as he readies for what is expected to be a front-running effort in the Kentucky Derby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 With the son of Good Magic set to have to gun it out of post No. 1 in the Derby, Gargan may give Dornoch a walk day Friday in an effort to have him extra sharp come Saturday. His stablemate\u00a0<b>Society Man<\/b>\u00a0meanwhile did hit the track for his gallop and gate schooling \u00a0Thursday, with plans to gallop Friday as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cThey both looked great on the track I thought,\u201d Gargan said. \u201cDornoch just had an easy morning, he went around there one time. We\u2019ve walked him more going into some of his races but it is the Derby. Tomorrow, I\u2019ll make the decision what we\u2019re going to do but most likely he\u2019ll walk because we want him to show speed. Society Man will go out and train. But I\u2019m pleased with both of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 On Wednesday, Gargan had famed farrier\u00a0<b>Ian McKinlay<\/b>\u00a0come and lace up a quarter crack on Dornoch\u2019s right front foot, an issue the colt has had dating back to his juvenile season. Gargan said the quarter crack is not something that has impacted Dornoch\u2019s training or running previously, adding there have been no signs of any heat or lameness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cHe\u2019s had it since has was 2,\u201d Gargan said of the quarter crack. \u201cIt\u2019s just routine what we do, Ian has always done him up. We\u2019re coming into the Derby and we looked at it last week and Ian said he\u2019d be good. We ended up putting one more lace in the top of it. But he looks great, no heat, he jogs beautifully. It\u2019s something he\u2019s had, it\u2019s been there. But he ran with it and won three races with it. We\u2019re pleased with how it looks right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Dornoch has been in a three-quarter shoe but Gargan said he will be shod with a full shoe Saturday morning.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\"><b>ENDLESSLY \u2013\u00a0<\/b>It was basic training business for\u00a0<b>Amerman Racing<\/b>\u2019s\u00a0<b>Endlessly\u00a0<\/b>Thursday morning at Churchill Downs, nothing fancy. The dark homebred son of Oscar Performance took part in the 7:30-7:45 training period for Oaks and Derby runners with regular exercise rider\u00a0<b>Walter Davilia<\/b>\u00a0in the irons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The jockey who\u2019ll handle him on Saturday \u2013\u00a0<b>Umberto Rispoli<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 was on hand as an observer and joined trainer\u00a0<b>Michael McCarthy\u00a0<\/b>trackside to watch the colt go through a smooth gallop of about a mile and a quarter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cNo more standing in the gate, no more trips to the paddock,\u201d McCarthy said. \u201cWe\u2019re all done with that. The only thing we want to do now is keep him happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><b>EPIC RIDE \u2013 Welch Racing<\/b>\u2019s\u00a0<b>Epic Ride<\/b>\u00a0jogged in the mile chute under\u00a0<b>Sophie Doyle<\/b>\u00a0during the 7:30-7:45 training period for Kentucky Derby and Oaks horses.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Third in the Blue Grass Stakes (GI) in his most recent start, Epic Ride was entered in the Kentucky Derby last Saturday as an also eligible and made the main body of the race when\u00a0<b>Encino<\/b>\u00a0was scratched this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Trainer\u00a0<b>John Ennis<\/b>\u00a0took the uncertainty of whether Epic Ride would be in the Derby in stride.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t get anxious or nervous,\u201d Ennis said. \u201cThe only aim is to get the horse to the race in the best shape possible. We are happy with everything and this morning he just bounced off the track.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><b>FIERCENESS \u2013 Repole Stable<\/b>\u2019s<b>\u00a0Fierceness<\/b>, 2023\u2019s 2-year-old champion, followed pattern and sauntered down to the racetrack for the 7:30 start of the special training session with regular exercise rider\u00a0<b>Danny Wright<\/b>\u00a0on board. The handsome City of Light colt galloped a mile and one half, then made a visit to the starting gate for the second day in a row.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cHe\u2019s good there (the gate),\u201d Wright said. \u201cJust in and out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Overseeing the colt\u2019s activities were trainer\u00a0<b>Todd Pletcher<\/b>, owner\u00a0<b>Mike Repole<\/b>\u00a0with family members and barn friend and favorite\u00a0<b>Avery Johnson<\/b>, the basketball player, coach and commentator.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Fierceness has been assigned post 17 for Saturday\u2019s 150th Kentucky Derby, a race where he has been tabbed as the 5-2 morning line favorite. Hall of Fame rider\u00a0<b>John Velazquez<\/b>\u00a0will be in the saddle.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\"><b>FOREVER YOUNG (JPN) \u2013 Susumu Fujita<\/b>\u2019s\u00a0<b>Forever Young (JPN)\u00a0<\/b>warmed up in the mile chute under training assistant\u00a0<b>Yusaku Oka<\/b>\u00a0and then galloped a mile and a half before returning to the chute to cool down before walking back to the Quarantine Barn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Trained by\u00a0<b>Yoshito Yahagi<\/b>, the undefeated Forever Young will be partnered as usual by\u00a0<b>Ryusei Sakai<\/b>\u00a0in Derby 150. Wayne Lukas\u00a0<\/b>leading the way,\u00a0<b>Just Steel\u00a0<\/b>checked off another day of routine training with a gallop twice around under the lights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cEverything\u2019s good,\u201d said\u00a0<b>Brian Coelho<\/b>, who co-owns Just Steel in partnership with his friend\u00a0<b>John Bellinger<\/b>. \u201cIt\u2019s nerve wracking at this point, but it\u2019s exiting at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 While Just Steel is not the most accomplished of the Derby entrants in terms of wins, he has it over most of his comrades in terms of experience. In throwback fashion, the son of Justify made seven starts during his 2-year-old season. He broke his maiden going six furlongs at Saratoga last August and earned his lone stakes win when he captured the 6 \u00bd-furlong Ed Brown at Churchill Downs last November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cHe\u2019s just an incredibly impressive horse who has competed at the pinnacle of his sport for the duration of his career,\u201d said jockey\u00a0<b>Keith Asmussen<\/b>, who guided Just Steel to his runner-up effort in the Arkansas Derby (GI) and will be aboard the colt on Saturday. \u201cHe broke his maiden at Saratoga, won the Ed Brown here, and has raced at every prep at Oaklawn. A horse that has his mindset and ability as a competitor, it\u2019s hard not to have a bunch of confidence in him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><b>MYSTIK DAN \u2013Lance Gasaway, 4 G Racing\u00a0<\/b>and<b>\u00a0Daniel Hamby III\u2019s Mystik Dan<\/b>\u00a0was out Thursday for trainer\u00a0<b>Kenny McPeek<\/b>\u00a0for a typical gallop of about a mile and three-eighths with\u00a0<b>Robby Albarado,\u00a0<\/b>a former jockey who regularly rides for McPeek and was available for the workout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cIt was a regular gallop, he\u2019s doing fine,\u201d said McPeek, whose colt will start from post 3 with jockey\u00a0<b>Brian Hernandez Jr<\/b>. aboard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 After two days of advance wagering, the winner of the Southwest Stakes (GIII) and third-place finisher in the Arkansas Derby (GI) \u2013 both at Oaklawn Park \u2013 was a 27-1 proposition for the Kentucky Derby.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\"><b>RESILIENCE \u2013<\/b>\u00a0Wood Memorial Stakes (GII) winner\u00a0<b>Resilience<\/b>\u00a0put in another easy gallop Thursday morning, visiting the paddock and then going about 1 3\/8 miles under the watch of trainer\u00a0<b>Bill Mott<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cEverything\u2019s good,\u201d Mott said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 With the scratch of\u00a0<b>Encino<\/b>\u00a0out to the race, Resilience will move in one spot in the gate and break from the No. 18 post.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\"><b>STRONGHOLD \u2013\u00a0<\/b>\u201cWe got on it real early; got him a good mile and a half gallop and he\u2019s doing good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0257155192MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 That was trainer\u00a0<b>Phil D\u2019Amato<\/b>\u00a0speaking about his Kentucky Derby charge\u00a0<b>Stronghold\u00a0<\/b>on Thursday following a training session that unfolded shortly after the track opened at 5:15.
