LOUISVILLE, KY (Sunday, May 7, 2023)<\/span><\/b>\u00a0\u2013 It was a celebration long into the night for the connections of Kentucky Derby 149 winner\u00a0Mage<\/b>, who had several fans and owners stop by Barn 42 Sunday morning to see the winner of Saturday\u2019s Run for the Roses.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cFor all of us, this was a lot of time dedication and sacrifice more than anything from these two boys (trainer\u00a0Gustavo<\/b>\u00a0Delgado Sr<\/b>. and assistant trainer\/co-owner\u00a0Gustavo Delgado Jr<\/b>.),\u201d co-owner\u00a0Ramiro Restrepo<\/b>\u00a0said. \u201c<\/span>This is a game that you lose way more than you win. It\u2019s a labor of love. You\u2019re just dream chasing. Today is very special for all of us. This is the top of the mountain in this sport for so many. Everyone knows the Kentucky Derby around the world. It\u2019s arguably, if not the, top race in the world. We had that dream come true. For one brief second, we can exhale, and look up, and enjoy this moment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Delgado Team also was on hand at Churchill Downs Sunday morning and stated the Preakness Stakes (GI) remains in consideration.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cThe horse is looking very good. I checked with the vet, and he\u2019s fine,\u201d Delgado Sr. said. \u201cWinning the Kentucky Derby is different than winning the Triple Crown and\u00a0Simon Bolivar<\/b>\u00a0in Venezuela. It\u2019s the same but different.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cIt was a very happy experience to win the Kentucky Derby with my son and family here. When we go out there and work every day, every day, every day, it\u2019s the best. Winning the Kentucky Derby was the goal. This is a good thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 For the first time since\u00a0Mine that Bird<\/b>\u00a0pulled off his 50-1 upset in the 2009 Run for the Roses, Barn 42 served as the residence of the Kentucky Derby winner.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mage became the 13th winner to come out of that barn since 1972, and the second winner to come out of Stall 10. The other Stall 10 occupant was 2006 winner\u00a0Barbaro<\/b>, who also wore the No. 8 saddlecloth in his run to glory.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cThis is something we wanted, we worked for this,\u201d Delgado Jr. said. \u201cMy dad had accomplished pretty much everything in Venezuela. For him, at 60-years-old, to start over again, pretty much at zero\u2026 and for me, it\u2019s the best example. I\u2019m very proud of him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mage is likely to remain at Churchill Downs for several days and could return to the track as soon as Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

TWO PHIL\u2019S (second) \u2013 Patricia\u2019s Hope, Phil Sagan\u00a0<\/span><\/b>and\u00a0Madaket Stable<\/b>\u2019s\u00a0Two Phil\u2019s<\/b>\u00a0was doing well Sunday after the Derby in Barn 1 at Churchill Downs, according to trainer\u00a0Larry Rivelli<\/b>\u2019s staff who were doing their daily barn chores.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Two Phil\u2019s, the winner of the Jeff Ruby Steaks (GIII) in late March, nearly became the second consecutive winner out of the race following\u00a0Rich Strike<\/b>\u2019s victory in Kentucky Derby 148.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cHe proved his race at Turfway was no joke,\u201d jockey\u00a0Jareth Loveberry<\/b>\u00a0said. \u201cIt was tough to run second like that but I know this horse gave me his all. He fought back when\u00a0Mage<\/b>\u00a0came to him. I can\u2019t say enough about everyone who\u2019s been involved with this horse. It\u2019s been such an emotional journey to get to this point in my career. I\u2019ve had so many ups and downs throughout the years. The most amazing part about the Derby was being here with my family. They let me do what I love and it means everything to me.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ll never forget the feeling (turning for home in front in the Derby). The view of the stretch, the crowd and the feeling I was going to win.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Rivelli, who was getting on a plane to Chicago Sunday morning, stated there are no immediate plans for the colt\u2019s next start.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ANGEL OF EMPIRE (third), HIT SHOW (fifth), VERIFYING (16th<\/sup>), Jace\u2019s Road (17th<\/sup>) \u2013\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Without having time to fully go over them, trainer\u00a0Brad Cox<\/b>\u00a0said all four of his Kentucky Derby runners were doing well Sunday morning.\u00a0Albaugh Family Stables\u2019<\/b>\u00a0Angel of Empire<\/b>, the 4-1 post time favorite, provided Cox with the best finish of the four by coming in third. He was followed by\u00a0Gary and Mary West<\/b>\u2019s\u00a0Hit Show<\/b>\u00a0in fifth,\u00a0Coolmore<\/b>\u2019s\u00a0Verifying<\/b>\u00a0in 16th and\u00a0West Point Thoroughbreds<\/b>\u00a0and Albaugh Family Stables\u2019\u00a0Jace\u2019s Road<\/b>\u00a0in 17th.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019re going to go over these horses this morning and hopefully they come out of it in good shape,\u201d Cox said. \u201cHit Show had a good trip. He had every opportunity, but was just fifth best.\u00a0Manny<\/b>\u00a0(Franco<\/b>) did a fantastic job on him. Angel of Empire was outrun early. He closed into a hot pace. He kind of tracked\u00a0Mage<\/b>\u00a0from the half-mile pole on.\u00a0Flavien<\/b>\u00a0(Prat<\/b>) went when he went. If you watch the two of them together, you could say that Mage was traveling a little easier than Angel of Empire. Angel of Empire just kept coming and coming, so big effort on his part. It\u2019s a hard race to get in and even harder to win.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Cox said it\u2019s still too early to know if any of the four Derby horses would move on to the Preakness Stakes in two weeks, but he does plan to be represented in the race.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cRight now,\u00a0First<\/b>\u00a0Mission<\/b>\u00a0is our Preakness horse,\u201d Cox said. I don\u2019t know if we\u2019ll add any of these horses, but we\u2019ll have to make a decision soon. First Mission had a fantastic work yesterday (five furlongs in :59.80). I\u2019m very happy with what we\u2019re seeing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Godolphin<\/b>\u00a0LLC\u2019s<\/b>\u00a0First Mission won the Lexington Stakes (GIII) April 15 in just his third career start.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

DISARM (fourth) \u2013 Winchell Thoroughbreds<\/span><\/b>\u2019 Disarm was back in Hall of Fame trainer\u00a0Steve Asmussen<\/b>\u2019s Barn 38 Sunday morning following his fourth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cHe\u2019s faced a lot of adversity this year,\u201d Asmussen said. \u201cWe\u2019re very proud of how he handled himself through it all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

DERMA SOTOGAKE (JPN) (sixth) \u2013 Hiroyuki Asanuma<\/span><\/b>\u2019s\u00a0Derma Sotogake (JPN)\u00a0<\/b>Derby dreams were dashed at the start when he brushed the gate leaving post 14.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cIt was an important race, but the moment the gate opened was everything,\u201d trainer\u00a0Hidetaka Otonashi<\/b>\u00a0said. \u201cMy strategy was to race in front, but I got into a situation where I couldn\u2019t do that at all and it was impossible to come back from that position.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI wanted to make a good lead if possible. (Jockey\u00a0Christophe<\/b>)\u00a0Lemaire<\/b>\u00a0said he felt good, but again he was poorly positioned. I think it is all about the late start out of the gate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Derma Sotogake is scheduled to return to Japan on Monday with the Japan Dirt Derby on July 12 as the next goal.<\/span><\/p>\n

TAPIT TRICE (seventh), Kingsbarns (14th<\/sup>) \u2013\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Trainer\u00a0Todd Pletcher<\/b>\u00a0was back on the job at Barn 39 early Sunday morning following the running of Kentucky Derby 149 Saturday in which his two colts \u2013\u00a0Tapit Trice<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0Kingsbarns<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 competed with the former finishing seventh and the latter 14th.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cThey both came out of it well,\u201d he said, \u201cand we\u2019ll be vanning them up to New York at some point in the next while.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Pletcher also had planned to run the likely Derby favorite \u2013 2-year-old champion\u00a0Forte<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 in the headliner but on the morning of the race Kentucky state racing veterinarians deemed the colt not ready to compete because of an issue with his right front hoof.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The two colts he did get to run were Derby starters 63 and 64 for the Hall of Fame conditioner. He won the Run for the Roses in 2010 with\u00a0Super Saver<\/b>\u00a0and again with\u00a0Always Dreaming<\/b>\u00a0in 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Pletcher also said he\u2019d likely be shipping his two of Kentucky Oaks horses \u2013\u00a0Gambling Girl<\/b>, who finished second, beaten a neck, in Friday\u2019s 149th edition of the \u201cRun for the Lilies,\u201d and\u00a0Julia Shining<\/b>, who never made it off the also-eligible list \u2013 to New York.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cThere\u2019s still a chance we might run Julia Shining in the Black-Eyed Susan at Pimlico during Preakness Week,\u201d the conditioner noted. \u201cI\u2019ll have to huddle with the owners on that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

RAISE CAIN (eighth) \u2013 Andrew\u00a0<\/span><\/b>and\u00a0Rania Warren<\/b>\u2019s\u00a0Raise Cain\u00a0<\/b>headed back to Keeneland on Sunday to trainer\u00a0Ben Colebrook<\/b>\u2019s main base of operations.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Plans are to be determined for the Gotham (GIII) winner.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWe will see how he comes out of this race, but there are no definite plans for his next race,\u201d Colebrook said. \u201cHe ran hard and had a tough trip late in the race.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

ROCKET CAN (ninth) \u2013 Frank Fletcher Racing Operation<\/span><\/b>\u2019s\u00a0Rocket Can<\/b>\u00a0was in good shape Sunday morning at Barn 19, according to Hall of Fame trainer\u00a0Bill Mott<\/b>\u2019s chief assistant Kenny McCarthy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Mott barn enjoyed success on the Derby undercard Saturday with\u00a0Godolphin<\/b>\u2019s\u00a0Cody\u2019s Wish<\/b>\u00a0returning to the winner\u2019s circle in the $750,000 Churchill Downs Stakes (GI).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Even though Rocket Can did not win the Run for the Roses, the Mott barn still played a part in the success of Mage\u2019s victory. His dam, Puca, was trained by Mott and finished 12th<\/sup>\u00a0in the 2015 Longines Kentucky Oaks (GI).<\/span><\/p>\n

CONFIDENCE GAME (10th<\/sup>) \u2013 Don\u2019t Tell My Wife Stables\u00a0<\/span><\/b>and\u00a0Ocean Reef Racing Stables\u2019 Confidence Game\u00a0<\/b>\u201cseemed happy\u201d Sunday morning following his 10th-place finish in the Derby and will be considered for the Preakness Stakes, according to trainer\u00a0Keith Desormeaux<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

MANDARIN HERO (12th<\/sup>) \u2013 Hiroaki Arai<\/span><\/b>\u2019s\u00a0Mandarin Hero (JPN)\u00a0<\/b>is scheduled to return to Japan Monday with connections looking at the Japan Dirt Derby on July 12.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mandarin Hero had a wide trip and was bumped hard in the second turn under\u00a0Kazushi Kimura<\/b>\u00a0in his second U.S. start following a runner-up finish in the Santa Anita Derby (GI).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI was hoping to finish in the top five, but it turned out to be a disappointing result. But I am glad I took on the challenge,\u201d trainer\u00a0Terunobu Fujita<\/b>\u00a0said.<\/span><\/p>\n

REINCARNATE (13th<\/sup>) \u2013\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Trainer\u00a0Tim Yakteen<\/b>\u00a0was closing up shop Sunday morning at Barn 27 on the Churchill backside, getting things ship shape so he and his wife,\u00a0Millie Ball<\/b>, could catch a plane back to Los Angeles later in the day.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He had made arrangements for another plane to take the six runners he had brought east to run on the Derby Day card to return to their Santa Anita headquarters on Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cReincarnate<\/b>\u00a0came out of the Derby (he finished 13th after running forwardly early on) in good shape,\u201d the conditioner said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He also reported that\u00a0Practical Move<\/b>, the big colt who had spiked a fever during Derby Week and never got a chance to run in the 149th edition of the Kentucky Derby, was recovering nicely and that he, too, would be aboard the Wednesday flight.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

KING RUSSELL (15th<\/sup>) \u2013\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Trainer\u00a0Ron Moquett<\/b>\u00a0reported that\u00a0Brereton C. Jones<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0Naber Racing<\/b>\u2019s\u00a0King Russell<\/b>\u00a0exited his 15th-place finish in the Kentucky Derby in good order and that next race plans are pending.<\/span><\/p>\n

CYCLONE MISCHIEF (18th<\/sup>) \u2013 Albaugh Family Stables\u2019 Cyclone Mischief\u00a0<\/span><\/b>was the final entrant in this year\u2019s Kentucky Derby but after a tough start, he finished 18th<\/sup>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Trainer\u00a0Dale Romans<\/b>\u00a0chief assistant\u00a0Baldemar Bahena<\/b>\u00a0stated the barn was disappointed in the outcome but the horse was doing fine Sunday morning.<\/span><\/p>\n
