{"id":3219,"date":"2013-06-04T14:34:11","date_gmt":"2013-06-04T19:34:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/?p=3219"},"modified":"2020-01-14T12:24:47","modified_gmt":"2020-01-14T17:24:47","slug":"belmont-stakes-notes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/belmont-stakes-notes\/","title":{"rendered":"Belmont Stakes Notes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ELMONT\u00a0, N.Y. \u2013 Kentucky Derby winner\u00a0<strong>Orb<\/strong>\u00a0continues to flourish at his home track, jogging Tuesday morning at 6 a.m. and leaving Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey pleased with the way the colt is coming into Saturday\u2019s 145<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0running of the Grade 1, $1 million Belmont Stakes.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1370457182690_9811\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1370457182690_9810\"><span id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1370457182690_9809\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u201cI think it\u2019s got to be a lot more comfortable than shipping to Kentucky or to Maryland; from here, all he has to do is walk from here [the barn] to there [the track],\u201d said McGaughey. \u201cHe walks through the paddock every morning and trains over the racetrack every day, which he did as a 2-year-old and 3-year-old, except when we were in Florida . He\u2019s been here for three weeks, and I think it has to be a help not only mentally but being familiar with the footing as well. He\u2019s done well here and trained well here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1370457182690_9816\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1370457182690_9798\"><span id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1370457182690_9797\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">Similarly, McGaughey thinks his own familiarity with Belmont Park , and that of jockey Joel Rosario, will be to Orb\u2019s benefit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1370457182690_9817\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1370457182690_9807\"><span id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1370457182690_9806\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u201cSome jockeys don\u2019t ride here on a regular basis, and they might not be as familiar with what\u2019s going on,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen they turn down that backstretch, they\u2019ve got a long way to go. Indy, who would run a distance of ground and gets horses who run a distance of ground, and he\u2019s out of a deep female family that\u2019s all bred for go long on the dirt,\u201d he said. \u201cHe\u2019ll run all day, and I don\u2019t think that\u2019s going to be a problem.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1370457182690_9801\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1370457182690_9828\"><span id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1370457182690_9827\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">As many as 15 will line up for the Belmont . In addition to Orb and Preakness winner\u00a0<strong>Oxbow<\/strong>, likely for Wednesday\u2019s post position draw are\u00a0<strong>Revolutionary<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Unlimited Budget<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Overanalyze<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Palace Malice<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Midnight Taboo<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Will Take Charge<\/strong>,<strong>Freedom Child<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Vyjack<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Incognito<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Always in a Tiz<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Frac Daddy<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Golden Seal<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Giant Finish<\/strong>. Wayne Lukas-trained contingent off the van early Monday evening at Belmont Park , where they will be stabled at the barn of trainer Barclay Tagg. Joining Oxbow were Rebel Stakes winner\u00a0<strong>Will Take Charge<\/strong>, who is also bound for the Belmont Stakes, as well as\u00a0<strong>Optimizer<\/strong>, who will compete in the Grade 1, $500,000 Woodford Reserve Manhattan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u201cEverything was fine. No problems,\u201d Lukas said of the arrival. \u201cThey trained well, had good energy this morning. Everything was in good order. They just jogged. They\u2019ll gallop this week. Everything\u2019s done now. Just keep them happy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">On Oxbow, Lukas said, \u201cHe\u2019s a tough little horse. The Preakness took nothing out of him. He\u2019s full of himself. He\u2019ll be tough again.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">Todd Pletcher\u2019s Belmont Stakes quintet had a quiet morning as they walked the shedrow at Belmont Park .<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u201cThey all went to the gate yesterday, so there wasn\u2019t a lot of action around here,\u201d<br \/>\nsaid Michael McCarthy, Pletcher\u2019s assistant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">Late Monday afternoon, Pletcher announced that the filly\u00a0<strong>Unlimited Budget<\/strong>\u00a0and the lightly raced\u00a0<strong>Midnight Taboo<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 both owned by Mike Repole \u2013 would join Dogwood Stable\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Palace Malice<\/strong>, WinStar Farm\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Revolutionary<\/strong>\u00a0and Repole\u2019s<strong>Overanalyze<\/strong>\u00a0in the race.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u201cOveranalyze is a Grade 1 winner, and he beat Oxbow by 5 \u00bc lengths in the Arkansas Derby,\u201d said Repole. \u201cHe ran a sneaky-good race in the Kentucky Derby where he was shuffled back but ran on, and I don\u2019t think he loved the track.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u201cI think this one year where I think the fillies are as good as the boys,\u201d the owner said of his decision to run Unlimited Budget in the Belmont . \u201cShe ran a good race when she was third in the Kentucky Oaks, and two fillies out of that race, Midnight Lucky and Close Hatches, came back to run 1-2 in the Acorn. Unlimited Budget is a large filly, and when the 15 horses come out you\u2019ll think she\u2019s one of the colts. She also has a good mind for a mile and a half where she\u2019ll settle.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u201cMidnight Taboo was talented as a 2-year-old before he went back to the farm,\u201d the owner added. \u201cHe won his first race back, and he was a really good second in his next race, a race he was never going to win. I think he would have won the Easy Goer [on the Belmont undercard], but you get one chance in your life to run in the Belmont Stakes, and he\u2019s getting his chance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">Unlimited Budget will have Rosie Napravnik aboard while Garrett Gomez will ride Midnight Taboo. Already confirmed were Javier Castellano aboard Revolutionary, Hall of Famer John Velazquez on Overanalyze, and Hall of Famer Mike Smith aboard Palace Malice, whose blinkers will come off for the Belmont .<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">Pletcher, who saddled five horses in the Kentucky Derby, won the Belmont in 2007 with the filly Rags to Riches, who was the first of her sex to win the race since Tanya in 1905.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">Jockey\u00a0<strong>Rosie Napravnik<\/strong>, who rode Five Sixteen to a fifth-place finish in last year\u2019s Belmont , looks to make history Saturday as she teams with the filly\u00a0<strong>Unlimited Budget<\/strong>\u00a0for this year\u2019s \u201cTest of the Champion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">Napravnik, who was aboard Mylute in the Kentucky Derby (5<sup>th<\/sup>) and Preakness (3<sup>rd<\/sup>), will be the first woman to ride in all three legs of the Triple Crown in the same year. She is bidding to join Julie Krone, who won the 1993 Belmont with Colonial Affair, as the only woman to win a Triple Crown race.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">Only 22 fillies have run in the race; of them, three have emerged the victor: Ruthless, who won the first Belmont in 1867, Tanya (1905) and Rags to Riches (2007).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u201cIt\u2019s exciting,\u201d said Napravnik of the possibility of a woman jockey winning the Belmont aboard a filly. \u201cI think it\u2019s great to bring some attention to the sport.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">Napravnik, who rode Unlimited Budget to a 3 \u00be-length victory in the Grade 3 Rachel Alexandra Stakes on February 23 at the Fair Grounds, is looking forward to being reunited with the Street Sense filly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u201cShe\u2019s a big, strong filly, and obviously she\u2019s been training well,\u201d said Napravnik of the Repole Stable color-bearer, who is 4-0-1 from five starts, with her only loss a third-place finish in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks. \u201cWith a big field, it\u2019s going to be a tough race for everyone. But I don\u2019t think [she will be intimidated] \u2013 she looks more like a colt. Plus, she can sit close to the pace, or close into it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">Belmont Stakes contender\u00a0<strong>Freedom Child<\/strong>\u00a0had a quiet morning on Tuesday, going out shortly after 7 for what trainer Tom Albertrani called a routine gallop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u201cIt was just an uneventful jog and gallop, his normal routine,\u201d Albertrani said. \u201cHe jogged back to the three-quarter pole, turned around and galloped a mile and a half. It went well. He couldn\u2019t be better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">A chestnut son of Malibu Moon, Freedom Child is coming off a command performance in winning the Grade 2 Peter Pan on May 11, leading from gate to wire to win by 13 \u00be lengths under jockey Luis Saez, who will be back aboard for Saturday\u2019s Belmont.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u201cI couldn\u2019t be more happy with the horse right now,\u201d Albertrani said. \u201cHe\u2019s in great condition, and he\u2019s giving us all the right signals. Now, we just have to lead him over there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">Albertrani said he wasn\u2019t concerned about the prospect of having 15 horses for the Belmont , which equals the largest field in the race\u2019s 145-year history, set in 1983. The last time as many as 14 went to the post was 1996.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u201cIt\u2019s not going to bother us,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re not going to be looking at more than two or three in front of us. The rest will hopefully be behind me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">Multiple graded stakes winner\u00a0<strong>Vyjack<\/strong>\u00a0put in a strong final tune-up for Saturday\u2019s Belmont Stakes this morning, breezing five furlongs in 59.00 seconds, handily, according to NYRA clockers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">The 3-year-old Into Mischief gelding was aggressively hand-ridden down the stretch of Belmont \u2019s main track by trainer Rudy Rodriguez, who pulled Vyjack up shortly after crossing the wire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u201cI just wanted him to work the right way, and he did what we asked him to do,\u201d Rodriguez said. \u201cI was happy with the way he did it, nice and comfortable. He looked good, and he seemed happy. He looks like he came back good, not blowing or anything. Beautiful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">Heavy rain on Monday forced Rodriguez to postpone Vyjack\u2019s final breeze until Tuesday, and it was delayed further after the trainer got caught in morning traffic on the way to Belmont from his base at Aqueduct, not stepping on the track until 9:24 a.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u201cHe\u2019s got very, very good energy,\u201d Rodriguez said. \u201cYesterday, we tried to graze him a little bit and he was bucking and kicking. He\u2019s been very happy. Maybe he likes Belmont . I hope so.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">Vyjack most recently finished 18<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0in the Kentucky Derby.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;\">\u201cHe looked like he handled the track better than Churchill,\u201d Rodriguez said. \u201cHe looked a lot more smooth. Over there, he changed leads a couple times, but that track was a little hard for him. He\u2019s doing great.
