STABLES & SILKS DERBY DAY PARTY…..With a new name and new venue, Williamson County\u2019s premier Kentucky Derby party is off to a flying start. Soroptimist International of Franklin is promising their racing-themed benefit, Stables & Silks, will be even bigger and more exciting this year.\u00a0 Stables & Silks (formerly Race For Victory) will be held Saturday, May 4th from 4 \u2013 8 PM at the Tennessee Equine Hospital off Columbia Pike in Thompson Station, a first as a location for the event, formerly held at the Franklin City Club.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur party has grown in popularity so much over the past few years, that we needed a larger venue, and what better location than one that ties so perfectly with the Derby horseracing theme,\u201d said Deborah Miller, event chair.\u00a0 \u201cTennessee Equine Hospital is our presenting sponsor this year. The rolling hills and their beautiful stable facilities will create a breathtaking setting for the Stables & Silks party.\u201d<\/p>\n

The nation\u2019s foremost horseracing event, the Kentucky Derby, is the backdrop and theme of the 5th<\/sup> annual Soroptimist International Derby Day Party, benefiting the funding of scholarships for women in Williamson County to Columbia State Community College and Bridges Domestic Violence Shelter. All proceeds from the silent auction will go towards funding the women\u2019s Columbia State scholarships and Bridges.<\/p>\n

Founded in 1921, Soroptimist is an international organization for professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls in communities throughout the world.\u00a0 The Franklin-based chapter has been able to fund at least two Columbia State Community College scholarships annually for the past 15 years.\u00a0 Last year, four women were able to attend Columbia State as scholarship recipients.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are many women who would like to further their education, but simply do not have the support or means to do so, and these scholarships can help with childcare and expenses that normal financial aid does not cover,\u201d offered Bethany Lay, Executive of Advancement at Columbia State Community College. \u201cSingle moms, particularly, face a number of challenges in going back to school, though they are often more committed and disciplined than traditional students.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beginning at 4PM, Stables & Silks will include a live simulcast of the Kentucky Derby along with traditional Derby fare, such as Kentucky Hot Browns and Mint Juleps.\u00a0 Live music will be provided by one of the area\u2019s most popular dance bands, The Chill Band.\u00a0 Highlights of the evening will include tours of the equine hospital and stables, a silent auction and a special bourbon tasting sponsored by Angel\u2019s Envy.<\/p>\n
