(March 2, 2013)\u2014Before an on-track crowd of 26,901 and in a performance for the ages, 6-5 favorite Game On Dude went gate to wire to win Saturday\u2019s Grade I, $750,000 Santa Anita Handicap by a record 7 \u00be lengths under Mike Smith, vanquishing eight rivals in 2:00.14 while becoming only the third horse in the 76-year history of the race to win it twice.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Trained by Bob Baffert , who picked up his fourth Big \u2019Cap win, Game On Dude, winner of the 2011 Big \u2019Cap, broke from post position eight and set front-running fractions of 23.64, 47.19, 1:10.97 and 1:35.24.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He paid $4.60, $3.40 and $2.10.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Owned by Joe Torre\u2019s Diamond Pride Stable (Torre was unable to attend due to a World Baseball Classic managing commitment in Arizona), the Lanni Family Trust, Mercedes Stable LLC and Bernard Schiappa, Game On Dude, a 6-year-old Kentucky-bred gelding by Awesome Again, picked up $450,000 for the win, boosting his overall earnings to $3,702,158.\u00a0 His record now stands at 24-12-5-1.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI think Mike really gets along with him well,\u201d said Baffert.\u00a0 \u201cHe must have given him a breather along there somewhere\u2026but the thing about \u2018Dude,\u2019 he\u2019s got to go along at a fast clip.\u00a0 The horse is just a great horse.\u00a0 What he showed today was amazing.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Clubhouse Ride, trained by Craig Lewis, paid $13.40 and $6.80.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Called to Serve paid $3.40 to show.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cThere was no beating Game On Dude,\u201d said Stevens.\u00a0 \u201cI should have been an easy second.\u00a0 We got in tight at the three-eighths pole and he doesn\u2019t like it down inside.\u00a0 When I got him out, he re-broke for me\u2026I\u2019m disappointed we didn\u2019t finish second.\u00a0 I know Nick is too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Florida-bred Ron the Greek, who came off a smashing win in the Sunshine Millions Classic at Gulfstream Park Jan. 19, made a huge run to win a \u201cDude-less\u201d Big \u2019Cap last year from well off the pace, was the second choice at 5-2 but was never a factor under Jose Lezcano.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI got my horse in a position he wanted to be in, and he gave me a good race,\u201d said Florida-based Lezcano.\u00a0 \u201cThe only thing is that Game On Dude is so fast\u2014nothing compares.\u00a0 We ran hard the whole way, but we couldn\u2019t keep up with him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
