\u00a0ARCADIA , Calif. (Feb. 28, 2013)\u2014Irish-bred Willyconker displayed a tangible turn of foot when challenged and won Thursday\u2019s $65,000 Wrightwood Purse at Santa Anita by 1 \u00be lengths under Garrett Gomez, getting one mile on turf in 1:33.44.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A winner of the Grade I Frank E. Kilroe Mile (turf) a year ago, the 6-year-old gelding was never a factor when finishing 10th<\/sup>\u00a0at 22-1 in the Grade II Arcadia Stakes on Feb. 2.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>The Wrightwood, a third-condition allowance for older horses with an optional claiming provision of $80,000, attracted a field of seven, including 9-5 favorite Causeithertz, who finished third.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Willyconker sat mid-pack early, angled out turning for home and took command nearing mid-stretch.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He paid $9.40, $4.60 and $2.40.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI think the drop in class today was a big key,\u201d said Gomez.\u00a0 \u201cWhen that other horse (Tigah) came to him, he reached down and did what he is supposed to and ran to the wire.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Owned by M. Gardner, D. Kenney, M. Vielle, K. Miller, O. Beasley and S. Kenney , Willyconker picked up $39,000 for the win, boosting his earnings to $423,550.\u00a0 His record now stands at 26-8-4-3.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Tigah, with Julien Leparoux up, paid $5.00 and $3.60.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Causeithertz, ridden by Rafael Bejarano, encountered traffic trouble at the rail approaching the quarter pole and then rallied for third money.\u00a0 He paid $2.20 to show.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There is a 50 cent Pick 5 carryover into Friday of $226,901, and a Pick Six carryover of $44,521.\u00a0 The Pick 5 pool is expected to exceed $1 million and the Pick Six pool should approach $300,000.<\/span><\/p>\n
