(Jan. 26, 2013)\u2014With a fast pace to run at, the Ed Moger-conditioned Qiaona smoked the final eighth of a mile to win Saturday\u2019s $300,000 California Breeders Champion Stakes for 3-year-old fillies bred in California by a half-length under Garrett Gomez while getting one mile on a wet fast track in 1:37.75.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Off at 23-1, Qiaona was freshened by Moger after breaking her maiden going a mile on turf of Dec. 6 at Betfair Hollywood Park .<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI didn\u2019t tell Garrett anything, really,\u201d said assistant trainer Ron Glatt.\u00a0 \u201cHe knew she was one of those horses that would come from out of it.\u00a0 You never know what to expect in this mud.\u00a0 The race track\u2019s been playing to speed earlier (in the day).\u00a0 You never know in this business.\u00a0 She always tries, this filly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cThe race actually just kind of fell apart,\u201d said Gomez.\u00a0 \u201cMy horse just kept going at the same speed and when I turned for home, I told her to go and I picked off a couple of horses.\u00a0 Then all of a sudden, I started to pick them off left and right, but she never really accelerated much.\u00a0 She just kept doing what she was doing and the horses up front\u2026I just kind of tried to pull out whatever tricks I had up my sleeve to try and accomplish what we got done.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Owned by Curt and Lila Lanning, Qiaona paid $48.60, $17.00 and $9.40.\u00a0 With the winner\u2019s share $165,000, Qiaona hiked her bank account to $228,010, and ran her record to 8-2-2-2.\"\"<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Runnerup Unusual Way , with Rafael Bejarano up, put a head in front of Marks Mine in deep stretch, but was no match for the winner late, finishing one length in front of third-place finisher Marks Mine.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Off at 7-2, Unusual Way paid $5.80 and $4.40.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Trained by Steve Specht and ridden by Abel Cedillo, Marks Mine sped to the lead from the rail and was resolute on the front end.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI was wishing the rain would have come back,\u201d said Specht.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s getting heavy out there now, but she ran good.\u00a0 I\u2019m not disappointed.\u00a0 She ran a big race.\u00a0 She just got run down the last sixteenth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Off at 12-1, Marks Mine paid $8.00 to show, while finishing 2 \u00bd lengths in front of 2-1 favorite Doinghardtimeagain and Joe Talamo.<\/span><\/p>\n
