(Jan. 20, 2013)\u2014From\u00a0Horse of the Year Wise Dan<\/strong>\u00a0to jockey\u00a0Ramon Dominguez<\/strong>\u00a0and trainerDale Romans,<\/strong>\u00a0a total of 10 Eclipse Award winners competed during the two-day Breeders\u2019 Cup World Championships at Santa Anita in what for many were their final performances of 2012\u2014once again establishing The Great Race Place as America\u2019s most coveted stage en route to racing stardom.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Trained by\u00a0Charles Lopresti,<\/strong>\u00a0Wise Dan won the hearts and minds of fans and media the world over with his devastating win in the\u00a0Grade I, $2 million Breeders\u2019 Cup<\/strong>\u00a0(turf) Mile<\/strong>\u00a0on Nov. 3, winning by 1 \u00bd lengths under\u00a0John Velasquez<\/strong>\u00a0while getting the distance in a rapid 1:31.78.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In addition to Horse of the Year Honors, Wise Dan, who is owned by his breeder,\u00a0Morton Fink,<\/strong>\u00a0was also voted top\u00a0Older Male and Male Turf Horse<\/strong>\u00a0by Eclipse voters\u2014thus becoming the first horse since the legendary\u00a0John Henry in 1981<\/strong>\u00a0to win Eclipse Awards in three different categories.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Santa Anita-based Beholder, Eclipse Award-winning 2-year-old filly,<\/strong>\u00a0won the\u00a0Grade I Breeders\u2019 Cup Juvenile Fillies<\/strong>\u00a0by one length at 1 1\/16 miles on Nov. 2, and was an 11-length allowance winner going six furlongs at Santa Anita on Oct. 4, her final prep for the Juvenile Fillies.\u00a0 Owned by\u00a0B. Wayne Hughes\u2019 Spendthrift Farm,<\/strong>\u00a0she is conditioned by\u00a0Richard Mandella.\"\"<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Undefeated\u00a0Shanghai Bobby,<\/strong>\u00a0who won the\u00a0Grade I Breeders\u2019 Cup Juvenile<\/strong>\u00a0by a head, was voted\u00a0Eclipse Champion 2-year-old male.<\/strong>\u00a0 Trained by\u00a0Todd Pletcher<\/strong>, he is owned by\u00a0Starlight Racing, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As expected,\u00a0Southern California-based I\u2019ll Have Another<\/strong>\u00a0was voted\u00a0Eclipse Award-winning 3-year-old.<\/strong>\u00a0 Although he was retired well in advance of the Breeders\u2019 Cup, I\u2019ll Have Another and\u00a0Mario Gutierrez<\/strong>\u00a0electrified the racing world with dramatic wins at Santa Anita in both the\u00a0Grade II Robert B. Lewis Stakes and the Grade I Santa<\/strong>Anita Derby<\/strong>\u00a0in advance of victories in the\u00a0Kentucky<\/strong>\u00a0Derby and Preakness.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0I\u2019ll Have Another, who is currently standing at stud in Japan , was owned by\u00a0J. Paul<\/strong>\u00a0Reddam\u00a0<\/strong>and trained byDoug O\u2019Neill.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Although she finished off the board in the\u00a0Grade I Ladies\u2019 Classic<\/strong>\u00a0on Nov. 2,\u00a0Godolphin Racing\u2019s Questing<\/strong>\u00a0was voted\u00a0Eclipse Champion 3-year-old filly<\/strong>.\u00a0 She is trained by\u00a0Kiaran McLaughlin.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Royal Delta,\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>who was an authoritative 1 \u00bd length winner of the\u00a0Ladies\u2019 Classic<\/strong>\u00a0under\u00a0Mike Smith,<\/strong>\u00a0was crowned\u00a0Eclipse Champion Older Filly or Mare.<\/strong>\u00a0 Trained by\u00a0Bill Mott,<\/strong>\u00a0she is owned by\u00a0Besilu Stables.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Trinniberg,<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0who took the\u00a0Grade I Breeders\u2019 Cup Sprint<\/strong>\u00a0by three quarters of a length under\u00a0Willie Martinez<\/strong>, was voted\u00a0Eclipse Champion Sprinter.<\/strong>\u00a0 He is trained by\u00a0Shivananda Parbhoo<\/strong>\u00a0and is owned by his wife, Sherry.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Groupie Doll,<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0the shortest priced winner at $3.40, of the two-day Breeders\u2019 Cup, parlayed a 4 \u00bd length win in the\u00a0Grade I Breeders\u2019 Cup Filly & Mare Sprint<\/strong>\u00a0to an\u00a0Eclipse Championship as to Female Sprinter<\/strong>.\u00a0 Trained by\u00a0William Bradley,<\/strong>\u00a0she was bred in Kentucky by\u00a0Fred and William Bradley<\/strong>\u00a0and is owned by\u00a0Burns, Bradley, Bradley and<\/strong>\u00a0partners.<\/strong><\/p>\n

French-bred Zagora,<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0who won the\u00a0Grade I Breeders\u2019 Cup Filly & Mare Turf<\/strong>\u00a0at 1 \u00bc miles by three quarters of a length, was votedEclipse Champion Female Turf<\/strong>\u00a0Horse.<\/strong>\u00a0 Ridden by\u00a0Javier Castellano,<\/strong>\u00a0she is trained by\u00a0Chad Brown<\/strong>\u00a0and owned by\u00a0Martin Schwartz.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Romans, who hosted a well-attended Meet and Greet event at his Santa Anita<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0barn<\/strong>\u00a0prior to the Breeders\u2019 Cup, won the\u00a0Grade I, $3 million Breeders\u2019 Cup Turf<\/strong>\u00a0with\u00a0Little Mike<\/strong>\u00a0and earned his first\u00a0Eclipse Award as the nation\u2019s Champion Trainer.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ramon Dominguez,<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0who rode Little Mike to his Breeders\u2019 Cup victory and who was selected by a vote of his peers as winner of the2012 Santa Anita George Woolf<\/strong>\u00a0Memorial Jockey Award<\/strong>, was easily voted\u00a0Eclipse Champion Jockey.<\/strong><\/p>\n
