{"id":2061,"date":"2012-12-09T11:16:52","date_gmt":"2012-12-09T16:16:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/?p=2061"},"modified":"2020-01-14T12:25:31","modified_gmt":"2020-01-14T17:25:31","slug":"double-vision-twin-wright-brothers-win-wrangler-nfrs-third-round","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/double-vision-twin-wright-brothers-win-wrangler-nfrs-third-round\/","title":{"rendered":"Double vision: Twin Wright brothers win Wrangler NFR\u2019s third round"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1355067246663_97\">LAS VEGAS \u2013 A record crowd at the Thomas &amp; Mack Center felt like it was seeing double.<\/p>\n<p>The 17,702 fans in attendance set a mark for the largest third-round crowd in Wrangler National Finals Rodeo history Saturday night, and Jesse and Jake Wright gave them something to cheer about by becoming the first twins to share a round victory in NFR history.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Wrights split the round victory in saddle bronc riding, posting identical \u2013 even though the brothers aren\u2019t \u2013 87-point scores.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t want to split a round with anybody else,\u201d said Jesse Wright, who padded his lead in the world standings by winning $16,343 with his ride aboard Frontier Rodeo\u2019s Let Er Rip. \u201cThe money is great either way, so it\u2019s nice that we both get some. Tonight was outstanding for both of us.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Jesse-Wright.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2062\" title=\"Jesse Wright\" src=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Jesse-Wright-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Jesse-Wright-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Jesse-Wright-1024x681.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jake Wright entered the 10-night rodeo in eighth place, but has soared to fourth on the heels of three checks in three nights, including back-to-back shared round titles. This one came aboard Bar T Rodeo\u2019s Big John.<a href=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Jake-Wright-14.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2063\" title=\"Jake Wright 14\" src=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Jake-Wright-14-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Jake-Wright-14-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Jake-Wright-14-1024x681.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast night I said that I\u2019d split first all night long as long as it was with good company and my brothers,\u201d said Wright, one of three NFR-qualifying saddle bronc riding brothers from Milford, Utah. \u201cBut money is the last thing on my mind right now because I\u2019m just having a great time being here and sharing this with my brothers and soaking it in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jesse Wright was bucked off in Round 2, but holds a $22,645 lead over second-place Wade Sundell with seven performances remaining.<\/p>\n<p>In tie-down roping, Justin Maass snared back the world standings lead that he lost just one night earlier, but it was five-time World Tie-down Roping Champion Cody Ohl who stole the show with the 46<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0round victory of his career.<\/p>\n<p>Ohl caught and tied his calf in 7.1 seconds, nipping Maass by just one-tenth of a second and reminding the rodeo world that this is anything but a two-man race to the gold buckle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t get off to a very good start; my first two rounds this year didn\u2019t go that good,\u201d Ohl said. \u201cMy calf (Friday) night was a little off pace, and it took a lot of time to get him tied up real strong. Now, I think I\u2019ve got myself a shot here. I\u2019m just going to have to get after it and give it all it takes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was Ohl\u2019s 43<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0round title in tie-down roping \u2013 three more came in steer roping \u2013 adding to the event\u2019s career round-victory record that he already owned.<a href=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Cody-Ohl-8.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2064\" title=\"Cody Ohl 8\" src=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Cody-Ohl-8-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Cody-Ohl-8-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Cody-Ohl-8-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Cody-Ohl-8.jpg 1776w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Maass pulled back ahead of reigning World Champion Tuf Cooper by $145.<\/p>\n<p>Like Maass, bull rider Cody Teel had seen his world standings lead evaporate over the first two nights at the NFR, but the Kountze, Texas, cowboy regained it by winning the third round with an 88-point ride on Kesler Rodeo\u2019s Whiskey Jack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel great about what I\u2019ve been able to do so far, but I\u2019m staying level-headed about it,\u201d Teel said. \u201cYou can\u2019t get too high or too low in this sport because things can change real quick. But I feel like now I have some momentum, which is very important in bull riding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Teel now leads three-time World Champion J.W. Harris by $467. But it\u2019s NFR rookie Beau Schroeder who leads the average. He and Teel are the only two bull riders who have made the whistle in their first three attempts and Schroeder has racked up 254.5 points.<a href=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Cody-Teel-15.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2065\" title=\"Cody Teel 15\" src=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Cody-Teel-15-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Cody-Teel-15-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Cody-Teel-15-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Cody-Teel-15.jpg 1776w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mary Walker\u2019s stunning stretch at her first NFR continued as she won the barrel racing for the third straight night.<\/p>\n<p>The Ennis, Texas, cowgirl and her horse, \u201cLatte,\u201d turned the cloverleaf pattern in 13.69 seconds. She leads the race for the Ram Top Gun Award, given to the competitor who wins the most money in any one event over 10 nights, at $54,772.<\/p>\n<p>Will Lowe won the round for the second night in a row in bareback riding, spurring Flying U Rodeo\u2019s Comanchero to 88 points and $18,257.<\/p>\n<p>The three-time world champion continues to put pressure on world leader and reigning World Champion Kaycee Feild. Feild tied for third in the third round and leads Lowe by $11,723, though Lowe, from Canyon, Texas, isn\u2019t necessarily thinking about it at this point.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t look at it that way; we still have seven more rounds,\u201d Lowe said. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be a race to the end. You just go day by day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Erich Rogers and Kory Koontz put together the first sub-four-second team roping run of the NFR, winning the third round in 3.9 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is my 19<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0NFR; saying that makes me feel old, but it never gets old to take that victory lap,\u201d said Koontz, from Sudan, Texas. \u201cWhen you make a run like we did tonight, there\u2019s no feeling at any other place we go that can compare to that kind of rush.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/LJS_nfr-12-3-mary-walker-1389.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2066\" title=\"LJS_nfr 12 3 mary walker 1389\" src=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/LJS_nfr-12-3-mary-walker-1389-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/LJS_nfr-12-3-mary-walker-1389-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/LJS_nfr-12-3-mary-walker-1389-1024x679.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Sixteen-time World Champion Trevor Brazile and heeler Patrick Smith took second in the third round and continue to lead the team roping world standings.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s check was the first of the NFR for Rogers and Koontz, and they weren\u2019t alone among the night\u2019s round-winners in that department. In steer wrestling, Wade Sumpter finished in the money for the first time with a first-place check worth $18,257.<\/p>\n<p>The Fowler, Colo., cowboy entered the event ranked No. 2 in the world, but failed to post a time in the first round, likely ruining his chances of winning the all-important average championship in the bulldogging race. Sumpter\u2019s best chance to remain in contention for a gold buckle is to grab as many go-round checks as he can from here on out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re always trying to be aggressive here and the start [of each run is] so important,\u201d Sumpter said. \u201cThe first night I got a good start and I just kind of went after that steer too much and we kind of collided out there, and it turned out bad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTonight, I just had to pin my ears and go at him and be as fast as I can, because that\u2019s about all I have for the next seven nights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two-time World Champion Dean Gorsuch continues to lead the world, ahead of Ethen Thouvenell, Sumpter and Casey Martin, who leads the average race through three nights.<\/p>\n<p>The NFR continues with Sunday\u2019s fourth round, which begins at 6:45 p.m. at the Thomas &amp; Mack Center.<\/p>\n<p><strong>54th annual Wrangler National Finals Rodeo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Thomas &amp; Mack Center, Las Vegas<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Third round, Dec. 8, 2012<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bareback riding:<\/strong>\u00a01.
