{"id":2053,"date":"2012-12-08T17:45:48","date_gmt":"2012-12-08T22:45:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/?p=2053"},"modified":"2020-01-14T12:25:31","modified_gmt":"2020-01-14T17:25:31","slug":"gorsuch-cooper-take-over-top-spots-on-wrangler-nfrs-second-night","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/gorsuch-cooper-take-over-top-spots-on-wrangler-nfrs-second-night\/","title":{"rendered":"Gorsuch, Cooper take over top spots on Wrangler NFR\u2019s second night"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1355005568786_103\">LAS VEGAS \u2013 Steer wrestler Ethen Thouvenell and tie-down roper Justin Maass stood atop the world for the final seven months of ProRodeo\u2019s regular season.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nAfter two nights at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, they both now have some catching up to do.<\/p>\n<p>Two-time World Steer Wrestling Champion Dean Gorsuch moved to the top spot on the second of 10 nights at the Thomas &amp; Mack Center before Reigning World Champion Tuf Cooper moved to first place in the tie-down roping, giving the world\u2019s richest and most prestigious rodeo three lead changes over the first two nights.<\/p>\n<p>Gorsuch, from Gering, Neb., moved to the top of the heap by finishing second for the second consecutive night. Thouvenell suffered a no-time, which could prove especially costly in the lucrative average race, which is commonly a major factor in determining the bulldogging world champion.<\/p>\n<p>Cooper, who took a big step in catching Maass by winning the first round, tied for second behind his brother, Clif, and has made $31,919 in the first two nights of the rodeo. He leads Maass by $11,340 entering Round 3.<a href=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Tuf-Cooper-150dpi.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2056\" title=\"Tuf Cooper 150dpi\" src=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Tuf-Cooper-150dpi-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Tuf-Cooper-150dpi-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Tuf-Cooper-150dpi-1024x679.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Tuf-Cooper-150dpi.jpg 1392w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The saddle bronc riding race also got much more interesting when world leader Jesse Wright was bucked off in the second round. He still holds a lead of more than $17,000, but his closest pursuers are all 2-for-2, including second-place bronc rider Wade Sundell. Sundell, Jake Wright \u2013 Jesse\u2019s twin brother \u2013 and Cort Scheer shared the second-round victory with 84.5-point rides.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hadn\u2019t been on in a long time, and to come here after these first two horses back, I feel good and I\u2019m ready to rock and roll,\u201d said Sundell, who had been out since early September due to a knee injury. \u201cThe knee feels awesome and I think it\u2019s where I need it to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m loving this and I can\u2019t wait for tomorrow,\u201d said Jake Wright, after earning checks in each of the first two nights of his first NFR appearance. \u201cI\u2019ve always wanted to come here and do really good and it\u2019s come true.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Jake-Wright-.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2057\" title=\"Jake Wright\" src=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Jake-Wright--300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Jake-Wright--300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Jake-Wright--1024x681.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A couple of ProRodeo\u2019s world leaders bucked Friday\u2019s trend by adding to their leads.<\/p>\n<p>The second round has quickly become one of the favorites of bareback rider Kaycee Feild.<\/p>\n<p>The reigning world champion has qualified for the NFR five times, and on Friday won at least a share of the second-round title for the fourth time. In fact, it was his fourth in a row as he scored 86.5 points on Carr Pro Rodeo\u2019s Riverboat Annie, matching three-time World Champion Will Lowe\u2019s effort on Classic Pro Rodeo\u2019s Bi Polar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was a little rusty last night,\u201d Feild said of his first-round ride on Thursday. \u201cI disappointed myself; I rode like a pansy. It\u2019s almost like you\u2019re trying too hard and beating yourself up before you even get on. I redeemed myself tonight. I loosened up and had fun. This feels good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite his frustrations, Feild, from Payson, Utah, finished fourth in the first round, and after two nights leads the average with a total of 171 points on two rides.<a href=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Kaycee-Feild-.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2058\" title=\"Kaycee Feild\" src=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Kaycee-Feild--300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Kaycee-Feild--300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Kaycee-Feild--1024x681.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lowe, the world champion in 2003, 2005 and 2006, sits behind Feild in both the average and world standings race \u2013 about $22,200 behind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone wants to be the rankest person out there,\u201d the Canyon, Texas, cowboy said. \u201cSometimes it works, sometimes it doesn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s worked out well for bull rider J.W. Harris over the first two nights. After snagging the world lead on the first night of the NFR, he rode Frontier Rodeo\u2019s Cowboy Compactor for 88 points and second place on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>He and his buddy, Cody Whitney, share the distinction of having earned the most money of any ProRodeo cowboys over the rodeo\u2019s first two nights. They each have a first- and a second-place finish, earning them $32,686. Whitney won the second round with 89 points on Wild Card Rodeo\u2019s The Grinch.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Cody-Whitney-12.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2059\" title=\"Cody Whitney 12\" src=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Cody-Whitney-12-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Cody-Whitney-12-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Cody-Whitney-12-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Cody-Whitney-12.jpg 1776w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u201cI know what my abilities are, and I don\u2019t want to sound arrogant but I would match my skills against anybody in the world \u2013 J.W. Harris or anybody else,\u201d Whitney said. \u201cI\u2019m focused on riding bulls and in 10 days they\u2019ll tell us who wins what, that\u2019s just the way I\u2019m looking at it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, the early leader in the race for the Ram Top Gun Award \u2013 given to the top earner at the NFR \u2013 is 53-year-old NFR rookie barrel racer Mary Walker, who won for the second consecutive night. With $36,514 in earnings, she\u2019s pulled within striking distance of world leader Brittany Pozzi.<\/p>\n<p>While it was Gorsuch taking the lead in the steer wrestling world standings, it was Billy Bugenig who shook off a first-round no-time to win the second round, tackling his steer in 3.6 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Thursday] night didn\u2019t start good, but we have an opportunity to go 10 nights, so I just told myself to treat every night like a one-header and see how much money I can win,\u201d the Ferndale, Calif., cowboy said. \u201cIt\u2019s a good start.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clif Cooper needed a last-minute dash to secure his spot at the NFR and entered in 15<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0place, but moved up five places, into the top 10, thanks to his $18,257 windfall for winning the second round.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI put a lot of work and effort coming into this year\u2019s NFR, and feel better than ever that I\u2019m ready for this week,\u201d said Cooper, from Decatur, Texas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Clif-Cooper-9.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2060\" title=\"Clif Cooper 9\" src=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Clif-Cooper-9-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Clif-Cooper-9-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/equestrianinfluence.com\/horsehappenings\/files\/2012\/12\/Clif-Cooper-9-1024x681.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>In a wide-open team roping race, Texans Luke Brown and Martin Lucero grabbed the second-round title with a 4.0-second effort, the fastest run of the rodeo thus far.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat steer ran hard and went to the right when we were breaking them in a few days ago, so I wanted to take a real aggressive start at him,\u201d Brown said. \u201cThe first shot at him was probably going to be the best. \u2026 I wasn\u2019t pumped up enough last night, and I wasn\u2019t as aggressive as I should have been, but tonight it all worked out perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had it on him so fast I kind of panicked and just tried to get my horse inside the turn and get a swing over his back,\u201d Lucero said. \u201cWe came tight really fast after I caught him, and I think that\u2019s what let us win the round.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first two nights have gone rather injury-free, though bull rider Ardie Maier remains questionable with a lacerated riding hand (he rode through the injury Friday but was bucked off) and bull rider Seth Glause is listed as probable after suffering a fractured and lacerated nose following an 86.5-point ride Friday night.<\/p>\n<p>The rodeo continues with the third of 10 performances at 6:45 p.m. Saturday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>54th annual Wrangler National Finals Rodeo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Thomas &amp; Mack Center, Las Vegas<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Second round, Dec. 7, 2012<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bareback riding:<\/strong>\u00a01.
