Shawnee, Okla.\u00a0(July 11, 2012) \u2013\u00a0Brittney Barr\u2019s horse may be handicapped, but a rodeo fan would never know it in the arena.<\/p>\n

The Ada , Okla. cowgirl\u2019s horse has only one eye, but it doesn\u2019t affect his work.<\/p>\n

The eight year old grulla named Braumbi had his eye kicked out when he was in a pen of studs at the age of three.<\/p>\n

Even though he was a good hrose, after the injury he was nothing more than a \u201cyard ornament,\u201d Brittney says, and her family bought the gelding.<\/p>\n

Her dad rode him to season him, and when she started taking him to rodeos, he spooked often. Anything outside the arena freaked him out: loud music, the bulls in the pens, long, dark alleyways into the arena.<\/p>\n

She took him to his first barrel racing two years ago, and the long, dark alley into the arena freaked him out. Brittney didn\u2019t want to run him, but her mom made her do it. After the weekend was over, she had won third place in her division and $1700. \u201cI thought, \u2018I\u2019ll keep him for awhile,\u2019\u201d she laughed.<\/p>\n

Brittney is in her second year of competition at the International Finals Youth Rodeo, and she\u2019s ridden Braumbi both years. She also competes in a few Oklahoma High School Rodeo Association events and in the Mid-South Rodeo Cowboys Association.<\/p>\n

With his handicap, Brittney has to be more cautious with him outside the arena. \u201cIf it\u2019s something he hears, he\u2019ll spook. Sometimes, if I\u2019m loping, he\u2019ll hear something and run the other way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Braumbi has a lot of heart, Brittney says. \u201cI know that if I don\u2019t come to ride, he\u2019ll take care of me.\u201d People ask her how he sees the first barrel, to turn around it. \u201cI go to his blind side first. I don\u2019t do a thing, he does it.\u201d Outside the arena, \u201che\u2019s a mess. He\u2019s a handful.\u201d But in the arena, it\u2019s a different story. Once he\u2019s in the arena, \u201che\u2019s never failed to work.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI just sit down (in the saddle) and he\u2019ll wrap it up. I hold on tight.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brittney is the daughter of Nancy Wells and Jim Barr. She will be a junior at Latta High School in Ada , Okla. this fall.<\/p>\n

The second go-round has begun with the Wednesday morning performance of the IFYR and results are attached. The rodeo continues with performances on Wednesday night and Thursday and Friday, at 9 am and 7:30 pm each day.
