SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 14, 2013) – Beau Clark was real happy when he tied for the arena record at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo two nights ago. That record didn’t last long.

The Montana native stopped the clock in 3.2 seconds in the first round of bracket three in the AT&T Center to become part of a four-way tie. Just two nights later, he saw his traveling partner Riley Duvall from Checotah, Okla., beat that time by one-tenth of a second. Duvall now holds the new record of 3.1 seconds all by himself.

Coincidentally, both of this year’s records were set on the same steer. Cattle are drawn at random and Duvall was extremely happy when he saw his name by the steer that Clark had previously run.

“I knew he was the best steer in the pen,” Duvall said. “I was pumped. My first two steers were good, but I hadn’t gotten any money yet. I knew I needed to win the round to have any hopes of making it to the semi-finals.”

Riley is riding a horse he calls Doc that he co-owns with his cousin Tom Duvall. His great-uncle Roy Duvall is a legend in the steer wrestling world with 24 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) qualifications and three-time world champion. His father Sam Duvall, uncle Spud Duvall and Tom have all been to rodeo’s championship event as well.

Riley is a two-time National High School Rodeo champion in the steer wrestling and if he keeps on like he did here on Thursday night, he will be the next generation of Duvalls competing at the NFR in Las Vegas.

“They’ve all been here before and have won a lot of rodeos,” Duvall said of his family. “I just want to make them proud.” The first phone call he made after his run here was to his dad.

J.R. Vezain is the first contestant to have a clean sweep in a bracket after winning round three in the bareback riding. Thursday. Vezain, from Cowley, Wyo., rode Mo Betta Rodeo’s Virgil for 85 points to win $1,965. So far he has accumulated $5,895.

He is coming off of his first NFR qualification where he finished the 2012 season in fourth place. While he isn’t ranked in the 2013 standings yet, a big win here will move him close to the top. Competing at rodeo’s championship event last year gave Vezain motivation to get back there this year and finish in first place.

“I just want that gold buckle,” Vezain said referring to the world championship. “Last year was great, but I won’t be satisfied until I finish the year with the world title, and the sooner that happens, the better.”

There is one performance at the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Eight-Time Large Indoor Rodeo of the Year on Friday at 7 p.m.  Complete results can be found at http://www.sarodeo.com/rodeo/results/2013-rodeo-results.
