Only four events remain until the PBR World Finals in Las Vegas
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Joao Ricardo Vieira (Itatinga, Brazil) was the only PBR (Professional Bull Riders) athlete to go 3-for-3 on the weekend as he earned the win at the Rumble in the Rockies, presented by Cooper Tires, on Sunday at the Broadmoor World Arena.
Vieira earned the victory by riding Big Cat (Dakota Rodeo-Berger/Struve/Heald) for 87.75 points during the Built Ford Tough Championship Round on Sunday afternoon. It was Vieira’s first Built Ford Tough Series (BFTS) event win of the season and his first two-day event win since St. Louis in 2014. The victory this weekend earned him 570 world points and $44,525, allowing him to move to fourth in the PBR world standings.
Montana’s Jess Lockwood (2-for-3) finished in second place after bucking off Catfish John (Dakota Rodeo-Berger/Struve) in 7.88 seconds during the championship round. Lockwood celebrated his birthday by winning Round 2 earlier in the day with an 87.25-point ride on Superstition (Paige Stout Bucking Bulls).
Lockwood also moved up in the world standings going from ninth to sixth after earning 400 world points and $19,305.
Luis Blanco (Iacanga, Brazil) made the most of his trip to Colorado by coming in third place, the highest finish of his career on the BFTS, picking up a crucial 240 points toward the world standings. Blanco went 2-for-3 and rode Scary Harry (JD Nix Rodeo Co.) in Round 2 for 85.5 points. Blanco bucked off Cochise (J.A.R.S. Bucking Bulls/Jane Clark/Gene Owen) in 1.91 seconds during the championship round.
Blanco leaves the PBR’s home state ranked 26th in the world standings after beginning the weekend in 34th. He took home a paycheck of $11,000.
Mason Lowe (Exeter, Missouri) and Ryan Dirteater (Hulbert, Oklahoma) tied for fourth in the event, earning 145 world points each. Lowe rode Rojo (JD Nix Rodeo Co./Jay Frazier/Nikki Nix)) in Round 2 for 84.25 points. Dirteater carried the early lead in the event after his 87.5-point ride in Round 1, but was bucked off in Round 2 and the championship round by Walker Bucking Bulls CRG’s Native Gangster (3.98 seconds) and J.A.R.S. Bucking Bulls Kill the Lights (2.54 seconds), respectively. Lowe walked away with $6,100 while Dirteater earned $8,305.
Cody Nance (Paris, Tennessee) finished sixth, earning 115 world points and $5,345 as he went 2-for-3 on the weekend. Nance rode Here I Go (Boyd/Floyd Bull Company) in Round 2 for 68 points but failed to cover Hey Jack (Jane Clark/Gene Owen) in the championship round.
Seven Dust (J.A.R.S. Bucking Bulls/Gene Owen) was named the High Marked Bull of the Event by tossing Kaique Pacheco (Itatiba, Brazil) to the ground in 7.55 seconds during the championship round. Seven Dust earned 45.50 points for the out.
The PBR’s best now move on to Eugene, Oregon, where Matthew Knight Arena will host the Wrangler Long Live Cowboys Classic on Oct. 1-2.
In Eugene, the second to last 15/15 Bucking Battle will take place on Sunday, Oct. 2. The 15/15 Bucking Battle will be broadcast live on CBS Sports at 2 p.m. PT while Round 2 and the Built Ford Tough Championship Round will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network at 3 p.m. ET.
Fans can also watch each round of competition live on PBR LIVE. PBR LIVE is available at no charge to all fans and media. Visit www.PBR.com/live to view. Fans can also watch all of the action via the PBR LIVE app, available for download on Google Play and iTunes.
The Rumble in the Rockies was one of the last stops on the 2016 PBR Built Ford Tough Series, which culminates with the PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals in Las Vegas on Nov. 2-6 at the new T-Mobile Arena. After five days of competition, the 2016 PBR World Champion, the bull rider who has earned the most PBR world standings points during the 2016 season, will be crowned and receive the coveted $10,000 World Championship belt buckle and a $1 million bonus.
The BFTS is televised every week on CBS, CBS Sports Network – the home of the PBR – and networks around the world. According to Nielsen, the PBR has seen a 20 percent increase in viewership on CBS over the same events in 2015. BFTS telecasts are produced for the PBR under a multi-year agreement with David Neal Productions, a Los Angeles-based production company led by 34-time Emmy® Award winner and Peabody Award winner David Neal, who serves as executive producer.
