RENO, NEV., June 27, 2013 — There is only one day left of regular competition at the Reno Rodeo and contestants are making plans for Saturday night’s championship finals.

The top twelve contestants with the highest total score in bareback riding and saddle bronc riding after two rounds will qualify for the finals. In the steer wrestling, tie-down roping, team roping, and women’s barrel racing, qualification will be based on the fastest total time on two runs.

The bull riders advance based on their score in one round. Kaycee Feild, the reigning and two-time Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world champion made a bid for a qualification here on Thursday night. Field won his first pair of championship spurs here in 2009. Then last year he tied for the win with Ryan Gray, from Cheney, Wash. Feild had the high-marked ride of the sixth performance with an 82-point effort on a horse from Big Bend Rodeo that bears the number 223. He will have his second ride here on Friday night. A similar score will have him here on Saturday night to try to win his third title here. He will have to beat Wes Stevenson, from Lubbock, Texas, who leads the overall standings with 169.

Stevenson competed at the first two performances here and his lead has held up through some very stiff competition. He has an eight point advantage over the man in second place, Steven Peebles from Redmond, Ore. Also in the mix is Gray who shared the title with Feild last year. In the saddle bronc riding, the 2006 world champion put himself in position to qualify for the finals and win his second pair of spurs. Chad Ferley, from Oelrichs, S.D., was 84 points on Flying Five Rodeo’s Spring Blues. The last time Ferley won here was the same year he won the world title. He is currently 18th in the world standings and needs to move up into the top fifteen and stay there until the end of September to qualify for his seventh Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Shane Proctor, from Grand Coulee, Wash., earned a world title and a Reno Rodeo championship in bull riding in 2011. He was one of three successful riders on Thursday scoring 80 points. This is currently tied for ninth and tenth place. He will have to wait through Friday night’s performance to see if he gets to ride here again on Saturday night.

News and Notes: Friday night June 28 is Pink Night (wear pink) to recognize Moms on the Run and breast cancer awareness. Splash Dogs are performing in the idoor pavilion.
