CHEYENNE, Wyo. — July 21, 2013 —  Trell Etbauer grew up in rodeo following his father Robert and uncles Dan and Billy Etbauer around.

He watched as Robert won two world titles and Billy won five, all in the saddle bronc riding. Dan also qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo on 10 different occasions. The lessons he learned have served him well as he pursues his own rodeo career.

While his family has primarily competed in saddle bronc riding, Trell has become known as a multi-event contestant working both ends of the arena (rough stock and timed-event). He has competed in saddle bronc riding here in the past, but injuries kept him from doing that this year, so he is just entered in the tie-down roping and steer wrestling.

He took the overall lead in tie-down roping here on Saturday after stopping the clock in 13.0 seconds at the second performance of the rodeo. He has a total time of 25.6 seconds on two runs and moved Trevor Thiel from Greeley, Colo., to second place with 26.2 seconds.

A hard running steer took him out of the steer wrestling and minimized his chances of winning an all-around title here. He is coming off a steer wrestling win at the Greeley (Colo.) Independence Stampede.

“It’s always good to see your name on the leaderboard. Hopefully this holds up,” Etbauer said. “I grew up coming to this rodeo. It would probably mean as much to my family as it would to me to win it.”

His tie-down roping horse was a wedding gift to Trell and his wife Kaylee in May of 2010 from Billy and Holly Etbauer. Their youngest son Treg named him Corduroy. Billy had started the young horse then Robert and Trell trained him.

Wyoming’s Seth Hardwick took the second round and overall lead in bareback riding after scoring 84 points on Burns Rodeo’s Nightmare. The Laramie resident has a total of 167 points on two rides. In the saddle bronc riding, Tyrel Smith from Cascade, Mont., has the same total to lead the overall standings.

Brady Menge from Fruita, Colo., has taken the lead in bull riding with an 86 point ride on Wild Card Rodeo’s Lil Shyster. This is the best ride of the rodeo so far where the bulls have definitely been dominating. Through the first two performances, only four riders have had successful rides so far.

The third performance of the 117th annual Daddy of ‘Em All starts at 12:15 p.m. on Monday. Action continues Monday night with the first performance of Championship Bull Ridings World Championships starting at 8 p.m.
